dum s UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MASAYOSHI TAKEUCHI, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
COT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 29, 1919.
Application filed February 18, 1919. Serial No. 277,699.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MASAYOSHITAKEUCH1, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and resident of Seattle, county of King, and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cots, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding cots and is particularly designed to provide a cot or support for an infant while being bathed and dressed. The special object of my invention is to provide a convenient folding support which may be used for infants while being bathed and dressed and which, at the same time, is cheap in construction and may be folded and put away when not in use.
My invention comprises a frame work which is composed of wires bent into suitable shape and a fabric cover or top.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown my device in the form of construction which is now preferred by me.
Figure 1 shows the device, in perspective, in opened position.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 shows the same device folded.
Fig. 4 shows a view of one side of what is substantially the same device, but in which the side frame is modified by the omission of the lower horizontal bar.
Fig. 5 shows, in perspective, a slightly modified construction for the frame.
The frame of my device comprises two side bars 1, which are provided with a leg at each end, a fabric cover and two swin ing brace frames which hold the device in elevated position, or in position of use. The side bars 1 are herein shown as of round metal bars. These are turned down at each end to form supporting legs 10. In the de- Vice as shown in Fig. 1, the lower ends of the supporting legs are connected by the longitudinal member 11. In the device as shown in Fig. 4, this lower connecting member 11 is eliminated and the lower ends of the supporting legs 10 are slightly turned up to form a rounded foot 12.
The fabric cover 2 is provided with a hem 20 at each of its long sides. The side bars 1 are inserted in these hems.
The brace frames comprise horizontal bars 3 and 30, which are vertically separated and which are connected at each end. This frame is pivoted by one end upon one of the supporting legs 10, by means of eyes 31 and 32, which are formed by bending the bars 3 and 30 about the leg. The ends of the bars 3 and '30 are connected by the vertical members 33 and 34.
The swinging end of each of these brace frames are provided with two hooks 35 and 36, these being so formed that the upper one 35, engages the inner side of the leg 10, while the lower one 36 engages the outer side of the same leg. In consequence, the swinging frames may be detached from the leg 10 which is engaged by these hooks, so as to permit folding into the position shown in Fig. 3. At the same time when the device is opened, the swinging frames may engage these legs in such a way as to hold them securely and prevent the side bars 1 from drawing so close together but that they properly support the cover 2.
In Fig. 5, I have shown a somewhat modified construction. In this a rectangular bottom frame 4 is formed, this being composed of a narrow strip of sheet metal. This is provided with holes at its ends for the reception of the laterally bent tips 13, of the supporting legs 10. It is also provided at its sides with holes for securing the laterally bent tips of a brace frame 5. This latter frame has its end portions 51 bent into a V-shape, which will swing between the supporting legs 10 and prevent their being forced together and thereby supports the strain due to the Weight of the body placed on the fabric top 2. In the device as shown in Fig. 5, the lower ends of the supporting legs 10 may be sprung inward enough to free them from the base frame 4 and the canvas top) may then be slid off these side bars and replaced by a clean top or be replaced after it has been washed.
What I claim as my invention is:
A folding cot comprising a fabric cover having hemmed side edges, side bars in said heme and turned down at each end to form supporting legs, and a bracing frame at each end pivoted upon a leg of one side bar and provided at its swinging end with two vertically separated hooks, the upper one engaging the inner side of the leg of the opposite side and the lower engaging the outer side of the same leg.
Signed at Seattle, Washington, this 11th day of February, 1919.
MASAYOSHI TAKEUCI-II.
