MARY ELLEN W OODWARD, OF PARKER, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
FOLDING CRIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,830, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed January 29, 1895. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY ELLEN WOOD- WARD, of Parker, in the county of Turner and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Folding Crib, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved childs crib, which can be folded very compactly when not in use, can be erected very easily and rapidly, and is firm and rigid when erected.
The invention consists in a folding crib formed of two side pieces and two end pieces, each provided at each end with a corner-piece having a triangular cross-section, which corner-pieces are hinged together in pairs, and bottom boards being hinged to swing upward to the bottom rails of the side pieces.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved folding crib, the same being erected, parts being broken out, and others in section. Fig. 2 is an end view, parts being in section and parts broken out. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the crib folded.
The crib is constructed with two side pieces,
A, and two end pieces, B, each being provided with an upright corner-piece, 0, having a triangular cross-scction, the ends of the said side and end pieces being secured to one of the sides subtending the acute angles of the corner-pieces. The corner-pieces O are hinged together in pairs by hinges D to form cornerposts. The pieces 0 of two diagonally-opposite corners of the crib are hinged together at their outer corners, d, and the pieces 0 at the other diagonally-opposite corners are hinged together at their inner corners, d. On the bottom of one piece 0 of each pair a plain or fancy leg, E, is formed, which may be provid: ed with a caster. It will be noticed that the legs E, at the point they join the pieces 0, from which they extend, form supporting'shoulders E, on which the other pieces 0 of the pairs turn when the crib is adjusted into position for use. This construction relieves the hinges connecting the parts from all strain, and trans fers such strain to the legs E, as will be seen. The said posts E may be formed at each end of either the sides or ends of the crib, and the pairs of posts at the sides or ends may be pro vided with rockers. The bottom is formed of two boards, F, hinged to the bottom rails of the side frames or pieces in such a manner that they can be swung upward and against the inner side of the said side pieces, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the corner-pieces C being recessed, as at c, Fig." 1, to permit the said boards to lie flush with the inner faces of the frames or sides A B. The side and end pieces or frames may be provided with rods uniting the top and bottom rails, or may be constructed in any other suitable manner.
\Vhen the crib is folded, the inner faces of the end and side frames rest against each other, as shown in Fig. 3, and the bottom boards, F, are swung up against the sides, and thus the crib occupies very little space, and can be transported and carried about very easily.
To erect the crib, the sides and ends are swung from each other to be at right angles, and so that the diagonal sides of the corner-pieces O are in contact. Thenihe bottom boards, F, are swung down, their ends resting on the tops of the bottom rails of the end pieces, and the said bottom boards prevent collapsing of the crib.
Heretofore folding cradles have been made with the side and end frames connected by hinge-joint, and having the bottom hinged at one side to one of the side frames. Folding cribs have also been made having the sides and ends hinged together, and the adjacent sides or edges have been correspondingly beveled. This I do not broadly claim as my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A folding crib formed of the two side pieces, A, and the two end pieces, B, each provided at each end with a corner-piece having a triangular cross-section, the said corner-pieces being hinged together in pairs alternately at the inner and outer edges, one corner-section LII of each pair being provided at its lower end E, adapted to serve as a support for the adwith a leg, E, substantially as shown and de scribed.
2. Afolding crib comprising two side pieces and two end pieces provided at each end with cornerpieces hinged together and legs depending from one corner-piece of each pair, the upper ends of said legs forming shoulders jacent corner-piece when the crib is adjusted 10 for use, substantially as set forth.
MARY ELLEN WOODWARD.
