*ADOLPH SANDERS, OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y.
CHAIR. v
I Application filed May 11, 1908. Serial No. 432,062.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLII I -SANDER S, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, State of New :York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is aspecification] t My invention is designed toaiford a simple but effective folding chair, which may be used either as an ordinary single seat chair, or unfolded to form a settee accom-v modating two persons. Thus unfolded my chair is also adapted for use as a bench or support for various articles for domestic use, as clothes baskets &c.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed specifically.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is an elevation of the backsideof my improved chair; Fig. 2, avertical sectionon plane of line 22 Fig. 1; Fig. 3, atop view of the chair unfolded; Fig. 4:, a vertical section upon plane of line 4E4 Fig. 3; Fig. 5, is a sectional detail upon plane of line 55 Fig. 3; Fig. 6, is a similar view showing the position of the extension bars when retracted; Fig. 7 is a sectional detail upon plane of line 77 Fig. 3. p
The base B is provided with the usual chair legsb, Z), and cross bars I), b, and may be of any ordinary or desired construction.
To the front edge of the base B, is pivotally connected the seat C, the hinge leaves Z, Z, being preferably situated in recess 6 and 0, formed for their reception in the base B,-and the seat C, respectively, in which re cesses the hinge leaves '1, Z, are held by screws, pins or dowels cl. A pintle 79, connects the overlapping ends of the hinge leaves Z, Z. By this arrangement the hinges are protected and concealed, and a substantial and finished structure attained.
Connected to the rear edge of the base 13 by hinges h, h, is a yoke Y, the cross member 3 of which fits over a rear extension 0, on the seat O when the latter is folded over on the base B as shownin Figs. 1 and ,2, thus locking the seat in position on said base B. When the yoke is turned-back and down as in Figs. .3, 4 and 5, the seat C is free, sothat it may be swung forward and over until its otherwise under surface 0. coincides with and is in the same plane as theupper sur'-- face Z), of the base B,'as shown'in Fig. 3.
' Specification of Letters Pa'tent. I
In this position the'seat C, is supported Patented April 20, 1909.
the base on one side and by the back rest 0 on the other, said back rest 0 being so proportioned as to correspond with the legs 6, on the base B and act in conjunction therewith.
In order to relieve the pintle p, from strain when the device isthus extended for use as a bench or settee, I provide extension bars E,"E, the forward ends 6, e, of which are projected under the seat 0 immediately beneath said pintle as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4E, The forward ends 6, e, of the said extenslon bars E, E, are supported in sockets b 6 for their reception in the under structure of the base 13.
I The rear extremities of the extension bars are suspended on rock levers R, R, pivoted I to the base B (see Figs. 5 and 6). The lower arm of each rock lever R,is formed with a slot r, into which a stud e,on the adjacent extension bar protrudes. The upper arm of each rock lever B is also formed with a slot 1 into which protrudes a stud 3 on the yoke Y. As a result of this construction the release of the seat C by the act of turning the yoke Y, back and down rocks each lever B from the position shown in Fig. 6, to that shown in Fig. 5, in which latter it will be seen that the forward end 6, of the extension bar E extends beyond the pintle above, on
that side and relieves it from the strain to which it would otherwise be subjected during the use of the device, as a settee, bench, stand or table. 1
When the seat G is again folded over upon 1 the base the act of looking it in position thereon by means of the yoke Y retracts the extension bars E, so that their forward ends 0, are withdrawn within the front line of the base "B as shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
What I claim as my invention and desire.
to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A folding chair consisting of a base provided with legs, a seat pivotally connected at its front edge to the front edge of said base and formed with a back rest adapted to act as a support for the seat when the latter is extended in the same plane as the base, a yoke'piece hinged to the rear edge of the. base, and adapted to engage with a projection on the seat, and an extension baron the'underside of said base connected with and actuated by said yoke piece, for the purprovided with legs, a seat pivotally conneeted at its front edge to the front edge of said base and formed with a back rest adapted to act as a support for the seat when the latter is extended in the same plane as the base a yoke piece hinged to the rear edge of the base, and adapted to engage with a projection on the seat, and a plurality of extension bars connected and actuated by said yoke, for the purpose described.
