Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. THIBAULT, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Pepperell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Combined Chairs and Couches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an article of furniture which is adapted to be used as a chair, a couch, a crib or a bed, the same being adjustable to enable it to be used for the various purposes hereinbefore set forth.

The object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture of the character set forth which is particularly adapted to be used in small apartments, thus economizing space by reason of the fact that it may, by adjustment of the different parts thereof,

be used for any of the dierent articles of furniture hereinbefore set forth.

The invention consists of a combined chair and couch constructed and arranged as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.

Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of my improved chair and couch. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the means whereby the two sides of the frame are locked together. Fig. 4 is a plan view, partly broken away, illustrating the device with the parts adjusted so that the same may be used as a bed or couch. Fig. 5 is a plan View with the parts adjusted so that the same may be used as a tte-a-tte chair. Fig. `6 is a sectional plantaken on line 6-6 of` Fig. 3. .A

Figure 1 illustrates in full lines the device with the different parts arranged vas an ordinary chair and in dotted lines the same is arranged as a reclining chair.

In the drawings, 10 is the main frame of the chair. Said main frame is divided into two parts 11 and 12,each of which has an upwardly extending portion thereon, consti- 5o tuting arms 13 and la, respectively. The

two parts 11 and 12 of the main frame 10 are slidable one upon the other. The part 11 has a horizontal framework 15 and the part 12 has a horizontal framework 16 rigidly fastened thereto, and these horizontal frameworks 15 and 16 (see Fig. 2) are slidable one on the other, the part 15 having a tongue 17 thereon which projects into a groove 18 provided in thepart 16, so that the two parts 11 and 12 may be slid one upon the other in a direction longitudinally of the arms 13 and 14. These two parts, however, are prevented, when so desired, from sliding one upon the other by an arm 19 pivoted at 2O to the horizontal framework 15, said arm having a notch 21 therein which is adapted to engage a screw 22 fast to the horizontal framework 16. This locking device is illustrated in detail in Fig. 3, which shows the same in rear elevation with the parts locked together by the arm 19, as shown in full lines and with the parts unlocked as ,shown by the arm in dotted lines. rFhe arm 19 may be thrown from the position shown in full-lines to that shown in dotted lines by means of a finger-piece 23.

The side frames 11 and 12 have embodied therein guide plates 211 and425, respectively. Said guide plates are recessed at 26 to receive the frame of the seat 27, said seat being slidable in said recesses 26 and upon the plates 24C and 25. A back 28 is hinged at 29 to the rear end of the seat 27 and a flap v is hinged at 81 to the upper end of the back 2S. Another flap 32 is hinged at 38 to the front end of the seat 27. The flap 32 has a segmental rack 34 hinged thereto at 35 and adapted to engage a plate 36 which is fastened to a supplementary frame 37,

whereby the flap 32 can be set at dierent angles as may be desired and can be set at different angles above as well as below a horizontal plane. The back 28 and flap 30 when in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 are sustained in that position by a rod 38 which Vextends across the chair and rests upon brackets 39 which are fastened to the side frames 11 and 12.

The supplementary frame 37 is constructed and arranged te' slide forwardly in dovetailed guide-ways 40 formed in the guide plates 24 and 25. lThis supplementary frame consists of a rectangular horizontal portion 41 and a vertical portion 42. A second supplementary frame 43 is adapted to slide rearwardly upon the frame of the device and consists of a horizontal portion 44 which is guided in dovetailed guide-ways 45 provided in the guide plates 24 and 25 and a vertical portion 46 which is rigidly fastened to the horizontal portion 44.

It will be seen that the two side frames 11 and 12 are tied together by the horizontal portions 41 and 44 of the supplementary frames 37 and 43, respectively, by reason of the same projecting into the dovetailed guide- ways 40 and 45. Said side frames are further joined together by the locking arm 1.9, hereinbefore described, and by a bracket 47 which is rigidly fastened to the horizontal portion 44 of the second supplementary frame 43 and through which bars 48 and 49 of the horizontal frameworks 15 and 16, respectively, project, these horizontal bars being slidable within a slot 50 which extends through the bracket 47.

It will be understood that the second supplementary frame 43 is slidable rearwardly upon the frame 10 and when it is moved to the position illustrated in dotted lines (Fig. 1) the back 28 and flap 30 may be moved into the position shown in dotted lines in said Fig. 1 and thus the device will be arranged to serve as a reclining chair in which the back 28 is supported by the flap 30 as a brace, the lower end of which rests upon the second supplementary frame 43.

Vhen it is desired to make a childs bed of the device the back 28 and flap 30 are dropped to a horizontal position, with the Hap 30 resting upon the second supplementary frame 43 when said second supplementary frame is withdrawn rearwardly on the frame of the device to the position shown in dotted lines (Fig. 1), and at this time to form an inclined head rest the flap 32 is adjusted to the position shown in dotted lines (Fig. 1) while the supplementary frame 37 remains in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1.

Then it is desired to make a full sized bed couch the supplementary frame 37 is drawn forwardly into the position shown in dotted lines (Fig. 1), with the flap 32 inclined at an angle and the iiap 30 then rests at its free end upon the second supplementary frame 43'. The back 28 is drawn into the position formerly occupied by the seat 27 and the seat 27 is drawn into the position shown in dotted lines (Fig. 1). When the device is lin this condition the back will rest in the recesses 26 and be supported by the guide plates 24 and 25 while the seat 27 will be supported at its forward end upon' the vertically disposed portion 42 of the supplementary frame 37 and at its rearward edge it will be supported upon the guide plates 24 and 25 resting in the recesses 26. The seat 27 is hinged at its front edge to the supplementary frame 37 by hinges 51, which are preferably of a detachable type and permit the seat to be disconnected and removed from said supplementa-ry frame.

A plan view of the device extended as just described to form a full sized bed couch is illustrated in Fig. 4.

ln Fig'. 5 the device is illustrated as a ttea-tte chair-that is, with the two parts forming the side frames 11 and 12 of the device moved out of alinement with each other. This result is obtained by throwing the arm 19 upwardly into the dotted position shown in Fig. 3 and then sliding the part 11 upon the part 12 until they assume the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 5. The seat 27 remains in lits normal position and the tlap 32 in a vertical position, both as illustrated in Fig. 1 in full lines, while the back28 and flap 30 are drawn down into a horizontal position and rest upon the vertical portion 46 of the supplementary frame 3. In this arrangement of the device one person can sit upon the seat 27 facing in one direction, with the arm 14 as a back, while another person can sit upon the horizontally disposed back 28 facing in the opposite direction and having the arm 13 as a back. l/Vhen it is desired to use the device as a crib, the parts are placed in the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 1 and the flap 32 is thrown upwardly into a substantially vertical position, so that a baby will be inclosed upon all four sides of the seat and will be prevented from rolling out of the device, when it is placed therein.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:

1. A combined chair and couch having, in combination, a main frame, and arms on opposite sides of said frame, said main frame being formed in two parts, slidable relatively to each other longitudinally of said arms, each of said movable parts carrying an arm.

2. A combined chair and couch having, in combination, a main frame and arms on opposite sides of said frame, said main frame being formed in two parts slidable one on the other longitudinally of said arms.

3. A combined chair and couch having, in combination, a main frame andarms on opposite sides of said frame, said main frame being formed in two parts slidable one on thev other longitudinally of said arms and means to lock said parts together.

4.
