UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE ERNST, OF BAYFIELD, AND HENRY Gr. ERNST, OF SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN.
COMBINATION CONVERTIBLE HIGH CHAIR.
.Application filed July 18, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THEODORE ERNsT and HENRY G. ERNST, both citizens of the United States, residing at Bayfield and Superior, respectively, in the counties of Bayfield and Douglas, respectively, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Convertible High Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to combination convertible high chairs and has special reference to an improvement upon a somewhat similar device patented by me in the United States on September 3rd, 1918, and Number The principal object of our present invention is to so modify and improve our former invention above referred to as to render the device applicable for other advantageous purposes.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in the form of a complete high chair.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the convertible device in the form of an enclosed baby or doll cradle.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmental elevation showing the interlocking arrangement of rockers, and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of Figure 3.
The device comprises two hingedly united sections which we shall refer to for convenience as the base section 1 and the seat section 2, their hinged union being at 3 where the front legs 4.- of the device are broken or separable.
The rear legs of the device are composed of two sections 5 and 6. To the lower end of the leg section 5 is securely fixed in any suitable manner, the rocker7, it being the same thickness as the legs 5 and preferably mortised and tennoned thereto, and, when the device is used as a chair, the upper edge of the legs 6 will abut the lower edge of the rocker 7. The rocker 8 however is attached to the rear face of the leg section 6 adjacent its upper end, and when the device is used as a chair, will overlap the rocker 7, thus forming a rigid rear support for the device; the upper ends of the legs 6 being of the same curvature as that of the lower edge of the rocker 70 Serial No. 485,407.
In order to keep the device locked in position when used as a chair we have provided upon the rung 9 a filler block 10 to which is attached externally thereof the depending spring catch 11, the lower end of which is so bent as to be engaged within a suitable hole 12 in the rocker 8. When it is desired to unlock the device the lower lip 13 of the spring 11 may be manually disengaged from the hole 12 and the device then opened to form a cradle as shown in Figure 2.
The shelf or floor 13 in the'base section 1 is spaced from the cut ends of the legs the same distance as the seat 14 is spaced from said cut ends of the legs of the seat section so that when the device is converted into a cradle as shown in Figure 2, the shelf and seat will be on the same plane forming a continuous bottom the entire length of the cradle, in which event a doll or child may be conveniently reclined therein and be wholly surrounded with upstanding portions of the device.
We have shown pivotally attached to the conventional back 15 of the seat section, a common tray 16 which may be swung backwardly to act as a handle for manipulating the cradle.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A convertible high chair and cradle comprising a seat section and a. base section, the front legs of which are hingedly united, a horizontally disposed bottom in each section which align with each other when the device is used as a cradle, rockers rigidly fixed to the abutting ends of the rear legs when used as a chair saidrockers being made to overlap each other when the device is in such position with the rocker on the legs of the seat section resting upon the ends of the legs on the base section, and means for" rigidly holding said sections with the rockers in such overlapped position.
In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
