FOLDING CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 396,2? 1, dated January 15, 1889. Application filed March 6, 1888- Serial No. 266,338. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS B. DEMAREST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmproxements in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The objects of my invention are to produce a chair suitable for places where space is liniited and valuable, and especially adapted for use in Sunday-schools where the teachers have to face forward during general exercises and face back toward their classes while instructing them.
It relates to a folding chair in which both the seat and the back are moved to the positions. required for sitting purposes and for easy ingress and egress to and from seats placed in rows, and is an improvement upon the chairs shown in Patent No. 197,723, granted to me December I, 1877; and it consistsin the several devices and combination of parts for obtaining these ends, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents, in perspective, a row of chairs having attached to the back of one of them, in a folded position, a chair constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing the back chair open. 3 is a horizontal section on line 00 a; of Fig. 1.
In said drawings, A represents the legs or standards of a chair or settee, having the sides B of the back B, as well as the support B for the arms C, formed integral with the standards. To the upper end of said standards are pivoted the brackets'd, to which is secured the seat D, so that the latter can be folded when desired against the front side of the back '3. To permit Sunday-school teachers to be facing forward during general exercise, or to be facing back while instructing their classes, and at the same time to be seated without disturbing the adjoining classes, the back of every fifth or sixth chair of a row is provided with a pair of standards, E, prefer ably cast integral with the standards and sides B of said chair.
To the upper end of the standards E, or it may be to lugs projecting rearwardly from the upper end of the-sides B of the primary or front chair, is pivoted, at e, the upper end of the sides F, carrying the back f of the extra, secondary, or rearwardly-projeeti 11g chair. To the lower end of the sides Fare pivoted, at f, the supports g for the seat G, the pivots f passing through said supports about onethird of the distance from their rear end, and from said rear ends a pin or lug, g projects laterally and is made to enter a groove, 6 in each of the standards E. Said grooves are substantially vertical, but preferably slightly curved, to throw the end of the support having the lug g somewhat outwardly to facilitate the retention of. the seat G when closed, and also to cause it to extend farther out when open.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with a chair, a secondary chair having the upper end of its back pivoted to the back of the primary chair, and its seat having a hinge-connection with the back of the secondary chair, and also asliding hinge-connection with the frame of the primary chair.
2. The combination of a chair having a seat and sides supporting the back thereof and secured to the rear of said sides, and a frame, E, having grooves therein, with a secondary chair-back having its sides pivoted to said frame and a seat having its supports pivoted to said sides, and lugs on the ends of said supports received within the grooves of the frame E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CORNELIUS l3. DEMAREST.
Vitnesses:
M. H. LEONARD, H. D. WVARNER.
