specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented Oct. 8, 1918.
Application led February 28, 1918. Serial No. 219,691.
To all lwhom it may concer/n.: v l W. Soor'r,'a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful'l Improvements in School-Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to an article of furniture, and particularly pertains to acombined desk and chair especially adapted for school use.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a combined chair and table which are assembled to form a unitary structure and which are so united as to permit ingress and egressfrom either s ide of the chair.
Another object of this invention is to pro- -vide a combined chair and desk, the desk member of which may be adjusted vertically,
disposed at various angles to the horizontal and is fitted with other means which permit the board of the desk to be moved inwardly and outwardly in relation to the chair, thus being capable of moving Ato an unobstructing position when a person is being seated in the chair.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the above character which is composed of few parts adapted to be readily assembled and manufactured in an inexpensive manner.
Further objects will appear hereinafter.
In carrying out the present invention, a chair of common construction is used, having a pair of rear legs and further supported by brackets which extend downwardly and then outwardly along the vfloor to provide supportin means for a table justed, as deslred, 1n relation to its bracket.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawmgs, 1n whichp Figure 1 is a view in side elevatlon, illustrating the desk and chair in` their assembled relation to each other. i
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation further disclosing the correlation of the elements of the desk and chair.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10l indicates a. chair, in fixed relation to which a desk 11 is positioned. .Y 'Ihe chair is rovided with a seat 12, united with vertlcal) back lrails 13 and 14. lThese rails are of common construction extending downfrom the brackets are turned up wardly to form rear legs 15 and 16 and upwardly to form the posts of the chair back. The posts are here shown as united by transversely dlsposed rails 17 and 18, preferably mortised into the opposing faces of the posts.
Extending downwardly beneath the front corners of the seat board are corner posts 19 and 20 which are united at their lower ends by horizontally extending rails 21 with the rear legs. In this manner a framework is formed beneath the seat for a drawer 22, here shown as being capable of being drawn outwardly from the side of the chair. A suitable handle or knob may be positioned upon the drawer of a design in keeping with that of the chair. The forward edge of the chair 1s supported by metallic brackets 23 and 24 which extend from the rear legs of the chair horizontally beneath the drawer. The brackets are bent downwardly on a line flush with the forward face ofthe posts 19 and 20 and extend to the floor, at which point they are bent forwardly. It will be understood that this bend in the brackets is s0 arranged ras to provide the forward edge of the seat board withsuitable supports similar tothe rear legs and that the seat board will be maintained in a proper horizontal plane.
The bracket members extend forwardly along the Hoor. At a point infront of the chair and a predetermined distance thereto form vertical posts.v The brackets so bent will form a U-shaped passageway in front of the chair which will allow ingress to and egress from either side of the chair. In the present instance the brackets form a space of about fifteen inches in width in front of the chair which is suiicient to provide knee room for the occupant of the chair.
The vertically extending posts 25 formed by the brackets terminate at a point slightlyi above the horizontal plane of the chair seat. Clamping bolts 26 are fixed to the posts in spaced relation to each other and adjacent to the upper terminating end previously specified. These bolts extend through longitudinally alined elongated slots 27 formed 1n table angle brackets 28. The angle brackets are particularly shown in Fig. 1,
where they will be seen to possess a stralght downwardly extending shank, preferably of angle section, which 1s bent upwardly and `outwardly to form a flat'bar, at the termitiene 'llh'se" angle members extend in a general direction toward the chair-sandlprpvide support for guideways 3@ uponwhich the table board 3l is slidably held. rllhe supporting guideways are provided. at their rear ends with shackle bars 32 which are pivotally connected therewith and extend downwardlyA to be clamped by the action of a clamping bolt 33. llt is to be understood'that the bolts 26 and 33 extend across and through the members speciied and that spacing pipes 34C are interposed-between the members and the bolts to hold the two brackets 23 and 24e in spaced relation to each other, as well as the angle brackets 28. The table board is tted with a pair of Xed ways 34C and stands upon the two rear legs l and l -means to support the desk from the upand which engage the guideways 30 to permit the' table board to be moved toward andv away from the chair, thus allowing easy egress and ingress.
llnruse, the chair is disposed as desired the downwardly extending portions of the brackets 23 and 2t.` When the chair is unoccupied the desk board 31 is moved to an extreme forward position in the direction indicated by the arrow a in Fig. l. 'llhe chair may then be occupied, it being readily seen that in ress and egress may be had from .either slde ofthe chair after which the vdesk Vboard may be drawn forward and adjusted by the occupant of the chair. Prior to occupancy or thereafter the angle members 28 may bevertically adjusted as well as the shackle bars 32. This insures that the desk will be properly adapted .for the individual requirements of the occupant.
llt will thus bel seen that the combined structure here disclosed provides a vdesirable article of school furniture within which a chair and desk are incorporated in a unitary manner and which allows the occupant to have ingress or egress from the chair from either side thereof and further insures that the desk may be accurately adjusted, vertically, horizontally and angularly.
While ll have shown the preferred form of my invention as now known to me, it will ,v nascere ll claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y l.. .lin schooll furniture, a seat,-rear door depending from the-seat, bracketshalng horizontal parts connected to the rear legs and to the front posts'and having parts eX- tending downwardly in alinement with the front posts, said brackets also having horizontal parts which seat on the floor and vertical parts which'ektend upwardly from the front end of the horizontal parts, a desk, and means to' support the desk from thew wardly extending parts, means to #support the front of the seat from said upper horizontal parts of the4 brackets, a desk, and
Wardly extending parts of the brackets.
3. ln schoolfurniture, a pair of verticalsupports, brackets having vertical parts secured to saidsupports and having angular n parts extending forwardly of the supports, guide-ways pivoted at one end to the front ends of the angular parts of the brackets,
shackle bars pivoted at their upper ends to the guide ways anddepending from the latter, means to adjustably connect the .lower ends of the shackle bars to the brackets, fa desk, and means to slidably connect the desk to said guide-wa s.
4. ln school Vrniture,.v ertica1 supports, brackets, means to vertically adjust vthe brackets on said supports, guide-ways, means to pivotally connect theguide-ways at the forward ends of the latter to the brackets, bars pivoted to the vguide ways and dependergaginglegsiorthe sea, front corner posts ing therefrom, means to adjustably connect I the bars to the brackets so as' to enable the rear endsof 'the guide-ways to be held at lvarying vertical' elevations, a desk, and
means to slidably connect the desk to said guide-ways.
In testimony whereof lf have lhereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscrib.
