Description
(1 10 Model.) O COMBINED CHAIR, DESK, A ND TABLE. No. 427,413. Patented May 6, 1890-.
' UNiTEn STATES PATENT QFFICE.
the device when used as a chair.
OLIVER FRITZ, OF STEPHEN, MINNESOTAL COMBINED-CHAIR, DESK, AND TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,413, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed September 6, 1889- $erial No. 323,208. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER FRITZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stephen,
in the county of Marshall and State of Minne-' sota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Chairs, Desks, and Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it. appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a combined chair, desk, and table, the object of the invention being the production of an inexpensive device which will perform the functions of a chair, desk, and table at the convenience of the user and in as thorough a manner as the separate dev1ces.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of the device illustrated, described, and claimed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of Fig. 2 represents a similar view thereof when used as a desk. Fig. 3 is a similar view thereof when used as a table.
Referring by letter to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts, A and A designate the supportinglegs of the device, which are pivoted together at a, and the legs A have the upper ends A extended.
B designates a seat secured to the supporting-legs and made of carpet, canvas, or other flexible material suitable for the purpose. The upper ends of the legs or supports A A are connected by a transverse strip A to which one end of the seat B is secured.
The letter C designates the arms, which are connected to the upper extended ends A of the supports A by means of transverse bolts 0, which pass through and work freely within elongated slots 0, formed in the arms 0, thereby permitting said arms to be adjusted at different positions.
D designates hooks on the lower ends of the arms for engaging eyes or loops D on the supporting-legs A, and to the upper ends of the arms is pivotally connected the board E. This board is provided at one end with a perforation e, which, when said board is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 1, will be engaged by the set-screw B, which passes through the end of the seat B into the cross-stripiA and serves to lock the part E when in the position above referred to.
F design ates detents or pawls pivoted to the slotted arms by means of a pi vot f and adapted to enter notches ,G in the board E to sustain said board in any desired position.
The manner of adjusting the parts of my device to produce a chair, desk or table will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings.
By my improvements I produce a device which can be utilized to perform the purpose of a chair, desk, or table in a thorough and efficient manner, and which device can be produced at a cost as low as any of the articles separate.
Then it is desired to use the device as a chair, all that is necessary is to throw the part E back and secure the same by means of the set-screw, the arms O at the same time assuming a horizontal position. It will also be observed that when in this position the notches G of the part E occupy a Vertical position and are engaged by the pawl or detent F, which serves to still further support and press said part. When it is desired to use the device as a desk or table, the position of the slotted arms are changed from the horizontal position occupied in Fig. 1 to a vertical position, while the part Eis changed from a vertical to an inclined or oblique position when used as a desk, or to a horizontal position when used as a table. In either case the part E is supported by the detent or pawl F.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A combined chair, desk, and table consisting of the supporting-legs, the seat secured to said logs, the slotted arms adjustable on the legs, the board pivoted to said arms, the detents pivoted to the slotted arms for engaging the said board, and the catches for retaining the slotted arms, substantially as described.
2. A combined chair, desk, and table consisting of the supporting-legs, one set of which have their upper ends extended, the slotted arms pivoted to the extended ends, the board pivoted to the upper ends or" the slotted arms, and the detents for engaging the board, substantially as described.
3. A combined chair, desk, and table consisting of the supporting-legs, one set of which having their upper ends extended and the other set having their upper ends connected by a transverse strip, a seat secured to said legs, slotted arms pivoted to the extended ends of one set of supports, a board pivoted to the upper ends of the slotted arms, said board being provided at one end with a central perfo- OLIVER FRITZ.
