UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WASHINGTON THOMAS PARK GEIGER, OF FORT MYERS, FLORIDA SCHOOL nnsx Application filed November 12', 1929: Serial No. 406,602.
My invention relates to school desks and The end walls 13 and 13* project beyond more particularly,t'o a-type wherein the table one of the side walls 14, as at 19, to accomportion is-adjustab'le, anditconsists in the modate rearlegs 20 and 20 which. are seconstructions,. arrangements and combinacured thereto. Smooth f table portion of the desk adjusted for a ready A' W dllected toFigs. 3 and 4, position, where n it w ll be seen that the boards 24 p g f t i fth h i and 2e are held in spaced relation bythe Figure'4 is a similar view, illustrating the e1[ld 26 and P JECt upwardly a considerable tableamovedfo th id f th h i it dlsta-nce above the seat 11. The upper ends entrance or exit ot a person to the chair, of the boards f and 25 a Provided with Figure 5 is a topplan view of the chair, a p ty of ahgned 1 2 31 Figure 6' is a vertical section on: the line All adlustable arm 29 15 m nted between 35 Figure 3, the back rest 22 and the leg member 23 and Figure 7 top Pian View of the arm, comprises a board 30 and arm rest 31. The Figure giisanenlarged cross Section vOn-the ooard 30 15 arranged edgewlse and at one edge line of Figure,5 thereof, the arm rest 31 is secured by screws,
Th i illu t t d. a bi d d k d or otherwise. The board 30 and rest 31 are 40 chair, generally indicated by the reference of g to extend fliom beyond the real character 10; the seat proper comprisingv an g member to a Polnt Well in n oblong box 11 including a bottom 12, end of the fPOIlt g member 23- walls 13 and 13 and side walls 14. Upon The leg member 20 is provided with a th t id f th d 11 13 13 d id longitudinal slot 32 extending from the top walls- 14, a seat 15 is secured. The seat is of the seat 11 to a point closely adjacent the formed in two sectionsplfi and 17 as clearly top board 21, and in this slot, there is a bolt illustrated in Fig-SP3 and 5. The section 16 33 cooperating with a slot 34 formed in the isfixed to the side and end walls, while the rear end of the board 30, as clearly shown section'17 is hinged'ly mounted,.upon the rear in Figs. 1 and 2.
0 wall'14, as atj18 ("see'Fig 6); A plurality of apertures 35 are provided in the board 30, arranged in vertical rows, these apertures being adapted to align with apertures 28 of the members 24 and 25 for rece tion of a bolt 36.
T e bolts 33 and 36 are each provided with wing nuts or the like, permitting ready tightening or loosenin", as the case may be.
To provide a finished appearance and to brace the arm 29, a triangular shaped facing board 37 is secured across the front ends of the members 3031, and a similarly shaped brace 38 is secured intermediate the length of the arm 29 to afford rigidity to the structure. If found necessary the members 30- 31 may be encircled by metal straps 39, these straps preferably, also embracing the braces 37-38, as shown.
The arm rest 31 is cut away as at 40 to ac commodate a table 41, and the board 30 is provided upon its upper edge with a pair of recesses 42 within which there is disposed ide bars 43 secured upon the underside of the table 41.
Preferably, the rear wall 40 of the slot 40 is inclined and the mating end of the table 41 is similarly shaped for snug alignment when in operative position, as shown in Fig. 8. A stop 44 is fixed upon the underside of the table 41 and is adapted to engage the board 30 when the table is drawn into operative position. A cross rail 45 is secured upon the opposite end of the table 41 and functions as a stop when the table is disposed in inoperative position, by virtue of its engagement with horizontal edge of the board 30. The rail 45 also includes a hand hold 46.
A book rest 41' is provided upon the table 41 to support books or the like, when the table is adjusted at an inclination.
In order to accommodate pens and pencils or the like, a suitable box 47 is secured beneath the arm rest 31.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the table may be adjusted to various angles with respect to the sea-t, by selection of adjustment of the arm 29 upon the upstanding members 24-25, the rear portion of the arm 29 being moved correspondingly within the slot 32. The arm 29 may be secured in its adjusted positions by tightgling the wing units of respective bolts 33- In the use of my device, it will be assumed that an occupant is desirous of leaving the seat. He grasps the table 41 at the hand hold 46, lifting upwardly thereon, and at the same time giving it a sliding movement. It will be apparent that upon upward lift of the table the mating edge of the table and the arm rest will be separated, and that the table will be free to slide downwardly through the slot 40. The table 41 is permitted to slide downwardly until the cross rail 45 engages and rests upon the board 30, where it will be securely retained in suspended position upon the side of the chair 10. The occupant will then be free to leave his seat without encountering any obstructions whatsoever.
To return the table 41 to its operative posi- 1 swing downwardly before the occupant. In T the downward movement of the table, it will be noted that the top edge of the board 30 acts as a fulcrum, and when the table reaches its final position, coacts with the mating edges of the arm 31 and table 31 to rigidly support the same.
It will be readily appreciated that I have provided a combined desk and table which may be cheaply constructed, and one which may be quickly adjusted to dispose the table portion at various angles.
I claim 1. A combined chair and desk comprising a framework defining a chair having a slotted back rail, a support forwardly of said framework and carried thereby and including spaced vertical members, a table having an arm pivoted between said members, said arm having a slot at one end thereof adapted to align with the slotin said back rail, means for securin said arm in adjusted positions upon said ack rail, said spaced members and said'arm having apertures for adjustment of said arm to dispose said table at various inclinations, and means for securing said arm to said spaced members.
2. A combined chair and desk comprising a framework defining a chair having a bac and seat, a support forwardly of said framework, an adjustable arm connected between said back and said support, said arm having a slot formed in the upper side and extending longitudinally thereof, a table slidable within said slot for disposition transversely of said seat, means for limiting outward sliding movement of said table, and means for suspending said table from said arm.
3. A combined chair and desk comprising a framework defining a seat and back, said seat including a forwardly extending side member, a pair of vertically disposed members secured to said side member, one being disposed upon respective sides of said side member and extending above said seat to provide a spaced support, one of said members forming a leg for said chair, an arm pivoted between said spaced members and adjustably mounted upon said back and a table carried by said arm.
4. A combined chair and desk comprising a framework defining a seat and back, said back including an upright member having a slot extending from a point adjacent said seat and terminating at a point in proximity to the upper end of said upright, a support ii.
secured to said seat and in advance thereof, said support having a plurality of spaced apertures, an arm, said arm being mounted upon said support and including a plurality of horizontally spaced apertures for registry With a selected aperture of said support, fastening means extended through alined apertures for pivotally securing said arm to said support, said arm further having a slot for registry with the slot of said upright member, and means for securing said arm to said upright in various adjusted positions.
