\ PHHJIJIP HIBLER, OF JOLIE-T, ILLINOIS.;
couvnarmnn Barton; 1
To all evhom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CONRAD J URKovIcH,
I a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Convertible Bench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined .seats and tables, and has for one of its objects to the claims, and in the drawings illustrativeof the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 i's a perspective view of the improved device arranged as a combined seat and table.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail of the spring controlled brace catch. I
Fig. 3 1s a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section showing the parts arranged to form a seat,
Fig.- 5 is a transverse section showing the parts arran ed to form a combined table and seat, an likewise illustrating a modification in the construction. Fi 6 is an end elevation showing two 0 the evices arranged to form a double size table with a seat at each side.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional detail illustrating the arran ement of the table brace.
The improved evice comprises a supporting frame, includin vertical relatively long members or standar s 10 and relatively short standards 11'.
Any required number of the standards 10 and '11 mag1 be employed, depending on the length of t e device, but for the purpose of illustration two sets are shown which will be sufiicient for an ordinary length of device.
At its ends the device is provided with supports 12 attached at their edges to the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 20, 1921-.
Application filed January 9, 1920. Serial No. 350,265,
standardslO and 11, and each with an opening, as shown.
A seat member 13 is attached at its rear edge to the standards 10 and bears at its forward ortion upon the shorter standards 11, and t e forward portions of the end supports 12.
At its ends the seat 13 iscut away to form relatively large recesses, and the cut, away portions replaced by filler members 14 hingedly united at 15 to the body of the seat, as shown. The recesses of the seat and the filler members 14' are preferably angular in outline and the latter are supported at their free pointed ends u on the rear portions of the supports 12. T e filler members 14 are movable upwardly, the object to be hereafter explained. Y
Hingedly united at 16 to the upper ends of the standards 10 is a combined back and table top 17,, the latter foldable into horizontal position as shown in Figs. 1 and 5 and into substantially vertical position in frontof the standards 10 as shown in Fig. 4.
Attached to the table member 17 at each end, is a cleat 18 extending below the lower line of the top, and attached to the member 17 in spaced and parallel relation to each .ofthe cleats 18 is another cleat 19, the
cleats forming guards for braces 20;which are pivoted between the cleats at one end, as shown at 21. When not in use, or when the top 17 is arranged as shown in Fig. 4,
the braces 20 will be folded against the face of the seat and between the cleats.
Each of the members 10 is formed with a seat or recess 23 to receive the free ends of the braces 20 whenar'ranged as shown in Fig. 1.
The braces 20 thus operate to maintain the table top member 17 in horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1, or permit the same to be disposed substantially in vertical or folded position as shown in Fi 4.
Thus when the device is to %e used as a bench or seat only, the top member 17 and position, and when required as a combined table, and seat, the transformation can be quicld accomplished; as before described with t e braces bearing at the free ends in the seats 23.
The standards 10 are upper ends by a rail 22 and their lower ends 100 braces 20 are disposed in. collapsed or folded connected near their 7 by a rail 24, and sta s 25 are arranged to bear at their lower en s upon the rail 24: and support the seat .13 intermediate its ends. Secured to the ends of each of the cleats 18 and 19 farthest.- from the pivots 21 is a spring pressed catch device represented as awhole at 27, each including a rib 28 to enter a socket or seat in the free ends of the braces 20, to hold thelatter yieldably .in locked position when not in use, or when the top member -'17 is arranged as a back for the seat, as shown in Fig. 4.
' ciency.
A conventional construction for the catch device is shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3.
When arranged" as a combined seat and.
table, the movable portions 14 of the seat, enable the intending occupants of the seat to very easily and readily pass thereto with out the necessity of climbing over the seat.-
This is a convenient feature of the device and adds materially to its value and 'efii- Foot boards 26 are arranged: next to the end supports 12, to facilitate the entrance of, the intending occupants of the seat thereto.
Two of the improved devices may be arranged back'to back as shown in Fig. 6, with the meeting edges of the table topmembers .coupled by hooks 23, or other suitable fastenmg devlces, if required, to form a table of double size.
In Fig. 5 a modifie'd form of the brace 20 is shown, which may be employed-instead of the brace structure shown in Figs. 1 and'6.-' The modified braces are pivoted at 30 in akeeper 31 on the longer standards 10 and en age by their free ends in a stop I 32 on the ower face of the top 17.- When.
.minals o not in use the braces hang in parallel relation to the standards 10 as shown indotted lines. Having thus described 1. A device of the class described, comprising a supporting frame, a seat supported at one edge from said frame, end supports at the terminals of said seat and attached to the frame, a combined back and table top swinging from said frame, cleats in spaced relation attached to the table..-t0p, and braces swinging at one end between the cleats and concealed thereby when withdrawn and I the invention, what, 1s clalmed as new 1s: 7
providing access to the s aces produced by the movable portions of t e seat, and a combined seat back and table top supported by said frame.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a sup orting frame, a seat supported at one edge rom said frame, said seat hav-.
ing recesses at its ends, filler members movably disposed in said recesses, a combined seat back and table top swinging from said frame, and braces supporting sa d table top from the frame. I I
; .In testimony whereof, Iaifix my signature hereto.
