OPERA- CHAIR.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,433, dated June 17, 1890.

To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SEYMOUR 'W. PERE GRINE, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Opera- Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descript on of the same.
My invention may be generally described as consisting of a tilting seat combined with a folding back and alockin g device arranged to hold the parts in proper position when the chair is in use, and to be operated to release the parts to permit folding when the back is tilted forward.
My object is to provide a chair that may be cheaply manufactured for use in galleries of theaters or base-ball chairs.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair ready for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same folded.
In the drawings,A is the floor or platform which supports the chairs. a a are standards having right-angular lower portions to be fastened to the riser and the floor proper, said lower portions bei n g made up of horizontal bearing-flanges 1 and the vertical flanges 2. The upper ends of the standards are formed into bearings 3 to receive the seat journals. The seat-supporting arms 4 are pivot-ally held in these bearings, so that the seat may be tilted from the horizontal position of Fig. 1 to the folded vertical position of Fig. 2. At the rear ends the arms are provided with lugs 5 5, on the outside of which are pivoted the side irons b of the back, the arrangement being such that the irons I) extend slightly below the pivots 6. The lock is interposed between the pivoted back and the standards, and consists of a lever O, pivoted to the seat-arm, having its rear arm extending beneath the sides of the back. Its forward arm is notched on the upper edge, and is thus adapted to engage a lugx on the rear of the standards, when the parts are in the position of Fig. 1 ready for use. It will be seen that should the person sit on the front edge or portion of the seat the position of the parts will not be altered, as the tendency of the seat to tilt up will be resisted by the lock, for it will be obvious that the looking-lever is held rigidlyin engagement with the lug by its rear arm being borne upon by the downward extension of the sides of the back. In order to fold the chair, the back is tilted forward, thus removing theextensions from the lock, allowing the forward end to drop away from the lug, and when the back is folded down upon the seat the weight is thrown forward of the pivots, and the seat and back auto matically assume the position shown in Fig. 2. By making the lower extensions of the sides of the back short beneath the pivots renders it necessary that the back be tilted forward a considerable distance before the locking-lever is released, thus preventing accidental operation of the parts should a person sit without leaning against the back.
By raising the back the seat is brought up also until it reaches a horizontal position, at which point the movement is limited and the backward nloven'ient of the back raises the lock to hold the parts in open position. The sides of the back are braced by the rods 8.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination,the standards, the folding seat pivoted thereto, the folding back, and a locking device movably supported on the seat, having one end engaging the standard and the other end being engaged by the lower portion of the folding back, substantially as described.
2. In combination the standard having a lug no, a pivoted seat having a locking-lever pivoted thereto and arranged to engage said lug, and the back pivoted to the seat and arranged to bear upon the locking-lever, substantially as described.
3. In combination, the standard, the pivoted seat and back, and the pivoted locking- ].ever arranged to engage a part of the standard, the said back having short extensions below the pivots to bear upon the locking-lever, substantially as described.
