UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD EDWARDS, OF SOUTH CHARLESTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,880, dated December 23, 1879; application filed July 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD EDWARDS, of South Charleston, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Seat, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of the device on line 90 m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a strong, easy, and convenient seat or range of seats for halls, opera-houses, &c.; and it consists of several upright side frames rigidly held by iron rods that support the seats, of a high curved back for the comfort of the occupants of the seats, and of a strong bracing-strip running across and secured to the hind legs.
The side frames Aare composed of the pieces a, that form the front legs and the back supports, and of the pieces b, that form the hind legs and the lower supports for the arms. These pieces are halved and fastened to each other Where they cross. The upper ends of the pieces I) are tenoned and fitted into mortises in the lower ends of the arms B, Whose upper ends are beveled on the under sides and united to the pieces a. near their tops, while ornamental strips 0 are fastened over thejoints thus made.
The iron rod O, run hing laterally through all the back supports, has swinging upon it,
between the frames A, the seats D that rest in a horizontal position upon the rod E that extends the entire length of the structure through the lower ends of the arms-; and the side strips of the seats, Where they should come in contact with the rod E are furnished with elastic buffers 61'. i
The back F may be made solid or ot'longitudinal strips, and is firmly secured to the upward-projecting portions of the pieces a.
The top strip f ornaments and strengthens the Whole device, and the bracing-strip Gr adds to its rigidity. may be constructed in any desired curve, or made in a straight line, and the seats D themselves ean be folded back against the back F.
It will be seen that the lower sections of the side frames are formed like a reversed letter V, and that the upper sections are triangles formed by the arms and the upper projections ot' a and b.
Having thus full ydescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure. by Letters Patent- The combination of the frames A B, the hinged seats D, the continuous rods 0 E, and the continuous stripf, substantially as shown and described.
EDWARD ED W ARDS.
