UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. STRAHAN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
WARDROBE FOLDlNG BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,643, dated September 7, 1886.
Application filed November 525, 1885. Serial No. 184,000. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. STRAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful \Vardrobe Folding Bed, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a folding bed having a bed-box which opens or lets down from a case or support, and to the peculiar mechanism and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described; and the objects of my invention are to provide a cheap and efficient hinge-bearing for the bed-box, and to so construct and attach the several parts that they may be readily detached and packed for moving, transportation, and shipment. These objects I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding bed constructed in accordance with my invention, having one of the side rails removed. Fig. 2 is an inside elevation of aportion ofthe upright ease, with a portion of the side rail, showing the journal-bearing of the bed-box. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. 2 on line :0 0:. Fig. 4. is a detached view of one of the side rails of the bed-box. Fig. 5 is an end view of the hinged panel, headboard, and bottom panel of the bed-box. Fig. 6 is a front Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the upright supporting-casewith one side detached. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the foot-board hinged to the bottom panel of the box and partially folded thereon; and Fig. 9 is a rear elevation of a portion of the upright case, showing the method of attaching the back to the side thereof.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The upright case is composed of the base XV, rectangular in form, as shown in Figs. 1 and 7, side pieces, 0 0, having base cross-bars O O secured to the lower ends and inner sides thereof, from which dowel-pins S S project downward, and through which cabinet-bolts D D pass, and back panel, Y. Each side piece is provided with dowels S S,which engage with suitable holes in the base \V \V. These dowels and holes are shown in Fig. 7. The panel Y is also provided with suitable dowels at either end, which fit into holes in the side pieces, 0 0. These dowels are not shown in the drawings, but the holes are shown in the detachedside piec'e,0,in Fig. 7 These do'wels and holes do not differ from those in ordi nary use, and therefore need not be more fully described. Each side piece, 0, has a groove, one ofwhich grooves is shown by K. The sliding panel T has its ends supported by these grooves and is moved verticallytherein. The back of the panel Y projects at either end, so as to lap upon the side pieces, 0 O, to which it is attached by screws, as shown by 14 14 14 in Fig. 9.
U is a panel, hinged at G O to the sliding panel T, and at O G to the headboard 13.
M M are journal-supports, each support being securely attached to one of the sides, O,of the upright case. The upper ends of the sup ports M M are cut out orgrooved out in order to form an open bearing for the journal of the bed -box. In addition to the curved. form shown in Figs. 2 and 7, Iprefer to cntagroove in the face of the curve for the reception ofthe ridge or flange B of thejournal H. The journal His a circle, or part ofa circle, ofwood or metahsccurely attached to the side rails, there being one of such journals on each side rail. I prefer to construct these journals witliflanges, as shown by B, which engage with the grooves on the face of the open bearings.
A is the bottom of the bed box. To this panel is hinged the head-board 13 at O C at one end, and the foot-board E at C C at the other end.
1 P are removable bolts, which I prefer to use with all the hinges, in order to facilitate the detachment of the parts hinged.
F F are bed-rail irons, one at either end of each side rail. TheseironsF F engage in suitable grooves in the head and foot boards, attaching the side rails and foot and head boards firmly together, forming with the bottom panel the bed box or body. The head of the box is weighted by means of suitable weights, so that the box will balance or nearly balance upon the bearing M M, in order to facilitate the opening and closing of the box. I prefer to have the supports M M rest upon the crosspieces' at the bottom of the side pieces, 0 O, which in turn rest upon the base XV, so as to form a firm support for the box, as I have shown in the drawings; but this construction 1 can be varied without departing from my invention.
For folding the head-board 13 is detached from the hinged panel U by removing the bolts from the hinges O O, and the bed-box lifted from the supports M M, which can easily be done,inasn1uch as the j onrnal H H merel rests in the bearings. The side rails are then lifted out or detached, asin common beadsteads, and the head-board 13 and the foot-board E are folded toward each other and rest upon the upper surface of the bottom panel, A, or, if desired, the removable bolts I P in hinges C O and O" 0 can be removed sufficiently to allow the entire detachment of the head-board and foot-board from the panel A. Thehinged panel U may in like manner be detached from the sliding panel '1. To take the nprightcase apart, I remove the cabinet-bolts D D and the screws 1.4 M14, &c., and separate the sides 0 0 from the base IV and also from the panel Y, when the whole bed, which is a perfect knockdown wardrobe -bed, may be packed into a small space, for shipment or for removal, without injury to any of its parts.
The construction above described not only lessens-the expense of shipment, but adapts the bed for use in chambers and rooms where it is difficult and often impossible to placcthc ordinary wardrobe-bed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a folding wardrobe-bed, the bottom panel, A, in combination with a headboard and a foot-b0ard hinged thereto, and detachable side rails, substantially as described.
2. In a folding ward robe-bcd, the combination of a panel, as A, a headboard and a footboard, each hinged thereto and detachable therefrom, and detachable side rails, substantially as described.
3. In a folding wardrobcbed, the combination of a bottom panel, as A, a foot-board and a head-board hinged thereto, detachable side rails, as R, having bearings, as H, secured thereto, and the vertical supports M M,secured to the side pieces of the upright case, substantially as described.
4. In a folding wardrobe-bed, abed-boxhaving circularjournals on the sides thereof near the head end, in combination with the detachable side pieces of the upright knockdown case, having vertical supports secured thereto, and provided with ournal-bearings in the upper end thereof, substantially as described.
5. In a folding wardrobe-bed,an upright case composed ofthe side pieces, 0 O, havingbase crossbars, base IV, panel Y, separabl y attached, and means for connecting the base and crossbars together, in combination with a bed-box adapted to fold within the space between said side pieces, substantially as described.
6. In a folding wardrobe bcd, the upright case composed of the side pieces, 0 0,connecting-panel Y, base \V, all scparably connected, in combination with the bed boX provided with a bottom panel, with a head-board and footboard hinged thercto, and separably-connected side rails, said box adapted to fold within said upright case, substantially as described.
7. In a folding wardrobe-bed, the combina tion ofan upright case consisting ofsidc pieces, 0 0, having supports M M secured thereto, base XV, on which said side pieces rest, connecting-panel Y, sliding panels 'I and U, all of which parts are separable, with abed-box composed of a panel, A, having foot-board E and head-board 13 hinged thereto, and detachable side rails, as R, said bed-box beingadapted to fold between the side pieces of the upright case, substantially as described.
JOHN T. STRAHAN.
