' E. BERN-INGHAUS.
Barber's Chair. "No. #307,099.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE BERNINGHAUS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBERS CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,099, dated August 20, 1878; application filed March 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE BERNINGHAUS, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbers Chairs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my chair. Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 a perspective View, of levers for adjusting the seat of the chair.
The object of my invention is to furnish a chair which is so constructed that the seat thereof can be adjusted to any desired angle by means of levers placed on three sides of the chair, and which is also simple and cheap, and can be easily operated by either the foot or by hand, as may be desired.
In the manufacture of my chair I provide a lever, A, which is hinged to the front crosspiece of the chair at B. The lever A is provided with a series of notches, and the free end of the lever is bent downward and furnished with a step, A.
Directly below the notches G ears I) are formed, to which the middle point of a cross horizontal lever, E, is hinged. The ends of this cross-lever pass through slots in the side pieces X of the chair, and are held in position against the upper part of the slot by means of springs F. The lever E is also prevented from moving out of the slots by stops G on the side of the lever. I then fasten a cross-piece, J, which is provided with two extension-pieces, H, and a connecting-bolt, I,
to the front part of the chair-seat. The connecting-bolt I is used as a pawl for engaging in the notches G of the lever A.
In operating the chair it will be seen that if a downward pressure is applied on the step A the pawl I will be released from the notches G, and the seat of the chair can then be thrown forward or backward to any angle. The pawl I can also be disengaged from the notches by pressing downward upon either end of the cross-lever E, thus enabling the person so desirin g to adjust the chair-seat from either side or from the back of the same.
I am aware that the application of the lever A and the notches therein to a chair are not new, and I do not therefore lay any claim thereto; but I am not aware that cross-lever E has ever been used or claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the chair-base, the tilting body or seat, the levers H and A, notched as described, and the spring cross-lever E, centrally pivoted to the lever A, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of March, A. D. 1878, in the presence of witnesses.
EUGENE BERNINGHAUS.
