Y CHAIR. No. 318,469. Patented May 26, 1885'.

CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,469, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed July 17, 1884. (No modeLl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BnNJhLzr l?. I-IARDEN- BURGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockland, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to chairs, the object being to provide au adjustable back, suitable securing devices, and a hinged head-rest of improved form, to add to the utility and comfort of the chair.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed ont in the claims.
Figurel represents a perspective view of a chair embodying my improvements, and Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate parts in detail.
A A represent the front legs of the chair, to which are secured arms B B.
C C represent the rear legs, recessed and rounded at their upper ends, c @,to receive the lower ends of the side pieces,D D,of the chairback E, which are similarly recessed and rounded. These sides D D are pivotally secured to the upper ends of the rearlegs, C C, by means of a rod, F, passing through open ings formed in said legs and sides. The legs of the chair are suitably braced and secured together by rnngs a, in the usual manner.
G G represent cross-bars connecting the side pieces, D D, and forming, with a vertical bar, I-I, the back of the chair.
To the top edge of the upper cross-bar, G,is hinged a block, I, serving as a head-rest. This block is formed with arecess, i, on the under side, to adapt it to rest securely upon the top edge of the bar G, and, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, it may be also thrown forward to rest against the front side of the bar G.
J J represent counterpart curved metallic arms passing through openings j j, formed in the sides D D, and secured at their forward ends to the rear ends of the arms B B. The lower ends of these metallic arms are secured by staples m m or other means to the rear sides of the legs C G.
L L represent levers fnlcrumed on pins or screws Z Z on the rear side ofthe lower bar,G, ofthe chair-back. rlhese levers L L are oppositelyinclined, andare connected pivotally at their meeting ends. The lever'L is provided at its outer end with a knob or fingerpieee, M, and is connected to one end of a retracting-spring, N, whose other end is se-A cured to the adjacent side bar, D, ofthe back. The lever L is formed with an elongated slot, 0, at its fulcrnm-point, said slot being at an angle to the length of the lever to permit the inward movement of lever. These levers L L are adapted to engage notches O O, formed on the curved metallic arms J J, to secure the chair-back when the latter is pushed back.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is-
l. In a chair, the combination, with apivoted back and curved notched arms projecting rearwardly from the chair, of oppositely-inclined levers fulcrumed upon the chair-back, and provided with a finger-piece and spring, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the pivoted chairback, of the notched arms extending through the side pieces of the back and the oppositelyarranged levers, one of which is diagonally slotted, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. IIARDENBURGH.
