Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT S. SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN RECLINlNG-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Lettere Patent No. 190,788, dated May 15, 1877; application led September 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT S. SMITH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in RecliningGhairs, of which the following is a specification z Chairs have been made with stationary arms, and with a back that is hinged at the rear of the seat, and links extending from the back to the arms with notches to go over pins in the arms. A In these chairs it has been necessary either to use a pin with a head, so as to prevent the link slipping off, or else to have a two-part arm with the link between. I avoid the use of either ol' these devices by making the notches of an outwardly-daring shape, and the catchpins to correspond, so that the links cannot slip ofi' the pins laterally.
In the chairs heretofore made, the links at each side have had to be operated separately, which is inconvenient, especially with a sick person. To avoid this I connect the links together at the back, so that they can both be lifted when the power is applied to either link.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair-seat, arms, and back. Fig.. 2 is a section of the pin and notched link, and Fig. 3 represents the mode in which the ilaring notch of' the link and the diverging pin can be applied in a folding chair.
The side pieces a c' of the back frame are hinged at b b to the seat c, or at any other convenient place iu the reclining-chair, and the arms d d are of any desired character, and the links c e' extend from the back and catch over the pins g. The notches in the links c c are not parallel, but flaring, so as to receive the pins g' Without their ends projecting necessarily beyond the outer surface of the link, because the tapering or conical form of the pin prevents the link slipping off, and there is nothing to catch in the clothing, and the appearance of the parts is improved.
The links c c are pivoted to the back frame c c', and also connected together, so that one link cannot be lifted without the other. This is preferably accomplished by the bar f that extends from one lnk,e, to the other, c', and is firmly attached at its ends. This bar f can be used to operate both links at one time from the back of the chair, or either link c or e can -be lifted and the other one will be simultaneously moved, thus allowing the chair-back to be inclined more or less to suit the occupant, and in so doing only one hand is required.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a reclining-chair having a hinged back, the combination of the links provided with flaring notches, and the catch-pins, of a similar shape to the notches, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, in a reclining-chair. of a swinging hinged back, notched links, catchpins, and a bar, f, connecting the links, so that they move together, substantially as set forth.
HERBERT S. SMITH.
