SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 348,716, dated September 7, 1886.

Be it known that we,JoIIN WILLIAM Roses and DANIEL MURDO 1\IOLAUOI-IT.AN,Of Albina, in the county of Mnltnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable RecliningOhair, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to the construction of an adjustable reclining chair, the object of the invention being to provide a chair which will be simple in construction, and which may be readily adjusted to vary the inclination of the main supporting-frame.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of our improved form of reclining-chair. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view illustrating the construction of the locking mechanism.

In constructing such a chair as is illustrated in the drawings above referred to, we provide two side posts, A and A, that are united at the top by a head piece, B, and at the bottom by a round or foot piece, G. The lower ends of these posts A A constitute the forward legs of the chair, the rear legs consisting of two shorter bars, D D, that are pivotally connected to the main posts A A by a central cross-bar, E, which extends through both posts,or the posts could be connected by pivotbolts, if such construction should be deemed preferable.

The seat F consists of a strip of heavy cauvas faced with plush or other material, the upper end of said strip being securely fixed to head piece 13, while the lower end is fixed to the upper crossbar, G, of the legs D D, the lowerend of said legs D D being connected by a cross-bar, H.

The arms N N of the chair are pivotally connected to the upper ends of legs D D, and

each of these arms is provided with a link, a, 5

that is pivotally connected to its upper end, and projects backward through a slot, 1), formed in the posts A A. An eccentrically mounted l0cking-cam,c, is pivotally connected to the projecting end of each of the links a, and is provided with a lever arm or handle, d, grooves e 6 being formed in the rear face of each post in order that when the locking-cams c are turned down to the position shown in Fig. 1, the arms N will be firmly held against the posts A A.

With such an arrangement as has been described the inclination of the posts A may be adjusted to suit the convenience of the person occupying the chair, the upper end of the post being thrown backward if the lockingclamps are moved from one of the upper to one of the lower recesses, c.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a reclining-chair, the combination, with the posts A A,pivotally connected to the legsD D,0f a seat, F, and arms N,provided with links a and locking cam c, substantially as described.

2. In a reclining-chair, the combination of the the following elements: posts A A,for1ned with slots 1) b and recesses e 6, legs D D, pivotally connected to the posts A A, seat F, arms N provided with links a, and eccentrically-mounted locking cams c, that are provided with arms or handles (1, substantially as described.
