Description

s UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo HAMPSHIRE, AS- SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED FOOT-REST.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,718, dated May 26, 1863.
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, F. M. WATSON and H. H. OLOUGH, both of Warner, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Foot- Lounge; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a vertically-adjustable bench or cushion on the top of a stand, from which a horizontal arm extends in combination with guideways secured to the trame of a chair under the seat in such a manner that said foot-lounge, when not used, can be drawn in under the seat of the chair, where it does notint'erfere with the ordinary functions of said chair, and when it is to be used it can be drawn out and adjusted in the desired distance from the chair, and in the height to support in a convenient and cornfortable position the legs and feet of the occupant of the chair.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the seat of a chair, which is made of wood, and intended to be cushioned and provided with a back and supports for the arms in the ordinary manner of easy chairs. This seat is supported by a frame, B, consisting of legs and cross-bars of the ordinary shape and construction.
O is the foot-lounge, which consists of a cushion connected by a hinge-joint, a, to the upper end of a screw-spindle, D, which is inserted in a vertical position into a standard, E, provided with a nut to flt to said screw, so
, that by turning the screw the cushion is either raised or lowered, according to the direction in which the screw is turned. The standard E is supported by casterl wheels or rollers b, and from that side of the same which faces the chair an arm, c, extends in a horizontal direction, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. that are firmly secured under the seat A to the frame B in such a manner that said arm, together with the standard E and cushion O, can be drawn out or pushed in at pleasure. The ways d may be divided in two or more parts, the outer parts being made fast to the frame and the inner parts to slide in and out, and by these means the extension of the standard and cushion can be carried on as far as desired. In practice, however, two extensions will be quite sufficient to carry the footlounge to the full extent of the legs.
F is a foot-board, which is secured to the standard E, between the cushion and arm or slide c, and which serves to support the feet when it is not desired to use thecushion.
When the foot-lounge 'is not to be used, the
standard E, with the cushion, is pushed in* under the seat, and the chair can now be used the same as an ordinary chair. When the foot-lounge is to be used, it is pulled out and adjusted at a convenient distance from the seat, and the height of the cushion is regulated by screwing it up until the same forms a comfortable support for the feet and ankles of the person occupying the chair, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The hingejoint a, whichconnects the cushion with the screw-spindle, enables said cushion to adjust itself to any desired inclination to suit the position of the feet or legs.
The attachment of our foot-lounge to a chair causes only a slight increase in the cost of the chair, and it renders the same superior in convenience to any chair now used.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of a vertically-adjustable orv hinged bench or cushion,.O, on the top of a standard, E, in combination with the horizontal arm c, and guideways d, secured to the fra-me B of a chair, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein shown and described.
F. M. WATSON. H. H. OLOUGH.
