Description
NITED STATES PATENT OEEICEO JAMES F. SARGENT, OF SOUTH STRAFFORD, VERMONT.
IMPROVED CHAIR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. SARGENT, of South Stratford, in the county of Orange and State ot' Vermont, have Invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs; and I do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to theaceompauying drawings, forming a part of this specification, inwhich- Figure l is a front view ot' my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Any improvement in chairs which gives ease and comfort to the sitter and enables him to change the position of the body from an upright to a reclining one is sought after and appreciated. The present invention relates particularly to the manner of tilting the seat of the chair and changing its angle relatively to a horizontal line, and also to a foot-rest applied to such chair.
My invention consists in mounting the chairseat in suitable supports in which it may have a swinging motion, and in attaching tosaid chair-seat plates having holes ,made through them, into any desired one of which a bolt or catch can be easily thrown by the sitter, by means of which the inelinationof the seat can be easily regulated, and also in attaching to said chair a foot-rest on which the feet of the sitter may rest, for giving him ease and comfort.
The chair illustrated is one of that class whose seat is susceptible ot' being revolved.
A designates the seat of the chair, which has attached to its sides metallic plates B', to which are pivoted two supports, C C, which sustain the chair and are carried down and pivoted so as to revolve on a stand or legs, a a. The plates B are perforated around their lower edger with holes b b in the line of an arc. To the supports C acatch, D, is secured, which is pivoted or hinged, as shown at c, so that abolt, d, can be withdrawn from or thrown into any desired one ot the perforations b by merely pressing up the upper end of the catch D, as can be understood by reference to Fig. .1.
E is a foot-rest which is secured to the supports C and tted to revolve round with the seat A. I propose to have the foot-rest secured so that it can be raised or lowered on the same angle as the chair-seat, and thus be well adapted for barbers and dentists use.
From the above description it Will be seen that the chair possesses all the advantages ot' a revolving chair and the capacity of having its seat placed at any desired angle to suit the fancy of the sitter.
My invention can also be applied to ordinary chairs-that is, those which are not made to revolve-and thus I produce a durable and cheap easy-chair.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the plate B, seat A, catch D, or its equivalent, andsupports C O, substantially as specified.
2. The foot-rest E, in combination with the seat A of a chair so arranged that its inclination may be regulated as desired.
The above specication of my invention signed by me this 19th day of February, 1866.
l JAMES F. SARGENT.
