Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL OSCAR LUNDBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED CHAIR.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 40.1 75, dated October 6, 1863.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CARL O. LUNDEERG, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the le tters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a vertical section of the chair and frame; Fig. 2 a top view of the frame.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a chair which has a front elevation of about thirty degrees from the plane withan extension frame or footrest for the purpose of giving the body, when sitting, an easy position and adapting the chair, when so elevated in front, to the limbs of the person using it, soas to prevent their becoming numb or partially paralyzed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe itsconstruction and operation.
I construct the back A and seat A of the chair in any of the known forms, but in all cases prefer to extend the back far enough for the head of the person using it to rest the head against the top of it. The legs of the chair are connected with rods in the usual way, eX- cept that the front one, b, is somewhat enlarged. rIlhe front legs are made abouteighteen inches in length, and are placed in the seat about at right angles with reference to its back, but with reference to each other are spread about as usual. The back legs are made about fourteen inches in length. and are set in the seat at an angle sufficient to prevent the chair tipping backward, which proportions will give the seat of the chair, A, an
incline of about thirty degrees from the plane of the floor.
The extension-frame B is made of wood, in the form shown at Fig. 2, the front end being a little Wider than the back. The front end is also provided with au extension, C D, made also of wood or other suitable material, made about in the form shown, and is extended or made to slide in or out by means of the rods and holes shown at a, so that the footrest D may be placed in any desired position. This extension-frame B is supported, when not in use, by the rounds b and c, and when in use by the rounds b and d, and is prevented from sliding through the chair by reason of the front being widened, its Width and length being adapted to the size of the chair, thus making, when complete, a very easy and comfortable chair for offices, reading-rooms, &c., and one which I think conducive of health and comfort in almost all of the places where chairs are used.
Having thus fully described my invention and its construction, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The foot-frame B, when applied to a chair having a front elevation of about thirty degrees, substantially as set forth and specied.
CARL OSCAR LUNDBERG.
