` Letters Patent No. 98,973, dated January 18, 1870.
IMPROVED CHAIR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and` making part of the same.
*HON- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. JOEGKEL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent vertical transverse sections of my improved chair, showing the upper seat respectively swung down and folded up.

rl`his invention-has for its object to so construct a chair, whose seat can be folded up or down at will, that the said seat will, when swung down, be supported by the jointed arm-rests of the chair, no iixed stop being required either in front or rear of the pivot'. Another' object of the invention is to provide chairs for Sundayschools and lecture-rooms, which will be adapted both to children and adults. For this purpose, a fixed lower seat has been arranged under the folding upper seat. NVhen the latter is swung up, the lower seat can be used, the upper one serving then as :mohair-back.

D D are the jointed arm-rests. Each arm-rest consists of two or more jointed bars, as shown, and is, with one end, pivoted to the back C, or to the upper extremity of the side support A, while its front end is pivoted to the seat, as shown.
Vhen the seat is swung down, asin lig. I, it is'in front supported entirely by the arm-support, and not by an'additional stop in front or rear of the pivot.
-When the seat is swung up, as in fig. 2, the armrests are folded with it, as shown. Under the seat O is fixed or pivoted, between the side supports A, another seat, E. The same is at a height to be adapted to the use of children, While the upper lseat is fitted for adults. When the upper seat is used,` the lower one will serve as a shelf for books, Sto. When the upper seat, however, is swung back, the lower one can be used, and the upper one serves the`n as a chair-back.
It will be seen that the essential difference, in respect to the folding seat, between my invention and others in public use,`which have jointed seat-arms, consists in dispensing, in my case, with cross-bar or stops against which the rear end of the seat bears when in a horizontal position, andin causing the arms to sustain the seat at the front, by extending the parts D rearward sufficiently to project through the slots in the back B. 'lhus I am enabled t-o pivot the seat to the standards at its extreme rear end, or at any other' point, as desired, and may employ any form of narrow standard; whereas, in the cases above alluded to, the standards must be constructed with special reference to the pivoting and supporting ofthe seat,vbesides involving other disadvantages not necessary to det-ail.
It is evident that the two parts of my present invention are not necessarily connected, and that a chair may be constructed with the swinging seat, which is supported by the jointed arm-rest, without having the second seat E, while, on the other hand, a chair may be made witha lower seat under a folding seat, when the latter is supported by suitable fixed or other stops.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure 'by Letters Patent- 1. The folding seat O, supported at its rear end by the pivot a, and at the front by means of the arms I) and D', the lat-ter being extended rearward of their pivots in the back B, as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
2. A chair, provided with a lower seat, E, under a folding seat, O, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described. Y
