FOLDING TABLE.
No.184,508 K Patented Nov. 21, 1876;
@aluminum UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH S. COBBAN, OF PLA'INVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
4nvl'PRovEMEm' IN FoLDlNG TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 184,508, dated November 21, 1876; application ld April 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH S. CORBAN, of' Blainville, in the county of Hartford and State of' Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of' parts as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a folding table which embodies my invention, and Fig. 2 is a-vertical section of' one end of thesame on line rv rv of Fig. 1.
A designates the table-top, provided at each end With strengthening-cleats a. B B designate the legs, arranged in pairs, as in ordinary folding tables, and connected by cross-board One pair of legs is secured by means of hinges to each end of' the table-board A, as indicatedby broken lines in Fig. 2. A rigid standard, b, provided with an outward-projecting lip, c, is secured to the table-board, in such position as to lie close to the outside of the cross-board C when the legs are perpendicular to the table-board, as shown in Fig. 2. In the cross-board C there is a button or turn, D, so located that, when turned in the position indicated by broken lines in Fig. l, it can pass by the end of' the standard b. y Said turn is recessed on one or both sides, outside of which recess there is a lip, d. y
When the legs are turned up against the standard b, the turn D is given a quarter-turn,
as shown, when its projecting lip d will hook under the lip c of the standard and lock the legs very firmly in place for use, as shown.
By throwing the turn into the position in-` dic-ated by broken lines in Fig. 1 it is released from the standard, and the legs may be folded upon the table-board, as indicated.
v.Although I prefer to form a lip upon both the standard and turn, theY device might be used Without a lip on either part, in which case the under side of head of the turn would engage With the outside of the standard.
If desired, braces or other ordinary fastening may be used to brace the legs upon the inside, in connection With the fastening herein described, but they are considered unnecessary. v
By my invention I produce a very convenient and firm fastening for the legs of folding tables.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a folding table, the standard b, secured to the table-board outside of the hinged legs,
and the turn D, secured to the cross-piece ofl the legs, and having its axis parallel to the table-board When the legs are perpendicular thereto, all substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
