Be it known that I, LAWSON G. Wesson, a

I citizen of the United States, residing at Snyder, in the county of Scurry and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Tables and Ironing-l3oards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accoi'npanying drawings.

This invention relates to convertible furniture and particularly to a table which is convertible into an ironing board and vice versa.

The general object of my invention is to provide a construction of the character described which may be readily converted from a table into an ironing board and in which a body portion is provided with two hinged leaves which when turned back form lateral extensions of the body portion to thus form a rectangular table and which when turned into alinement with the longitudinalaxis of the body portion form the tapered. extension of the iro-ningboard.

A'further object is to provide means for holding these sections in their extended position or retracted position and for the en gagement of legs with the table.

Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an under side plan view of the device in the form of an ironing board;

Fig. 2 is an under side plan view of the device in the form of a table top;

Fig. 3 is an elevation of the ironing board;

Fig. 4 is an elevation of the table top showing the legs connected therewith; and

5 is an end elevation of the table top and the legs.

It will be seen from the drawings that my device comprises a body portion 10 which is narrower at one end than at the other and has uniformly tapered side edges. Hingedly connected to the narrow end of the section 10 are the sections 11 and 12 which are identical in form, each of said sections being hinged at its outer edge to the outer edge of the section 10 by the hinges 13 so that said sections 11 and 12 may be turned back to the posltlon shown in Fig. 2. The outer edges of the sections 11 and 12 are inclined so that when these sections are turned back, as shown in Flg. 2, they will fit against the inclined side edges of the body section 10 and will, together with the body section 10, form a square or rectangular table top. When the sections 11 and 12 are turned to the position shown in Fig 1, the outside inclined edges forin continuations or are flush with the outside inclined edges of the body section 10.

The body section 10 at its wider end provided. with the eyes let while the sections 1.1 and 12 at their outer ends are each provided with a hook 15 and an eye 16. When the sections 11 and 12 are turned to the position shown in Fig. 1 these hooks and eyes may be engaged with each other to hold the sections 11. and 12 in abutting relation while wl'ien the sections 11 and 12 are turned back to the position shown in Fig. 2, the hooks are adapted to engage the eyes 1&1 and thus hold the sections 11 and 12 abutted against the side edges of the body section 10. For the purpose of holding the sections 10, 11 and 12 in the same plane when the sections 11 and 12 are turned to form the ironing board, I provide the straps 17 attached to the under face of the board and provide a sliding bar 18 disposed in sliding engagement with the straps. There are three of these straps 17 and this sliding bar 18 may be shifted so as to lie wholly beneath the section 10 or shifted so as to lie partly beneath the section 10 and partly beneath the sections 11 and 12, thus supporting these sections in the position shown in Fig. 1. This sliding bar 18 is provided with a stop 19. Preferably the under face of the sections 10, 11 and 12 adjacent their side edges are provided with buttons or studs 20 and an ironing cloth 21 is provided having snap sockets 22 engageable with these studs 20. Any other means may be used for detachably holding the cloth 21 in place. I have shown in Figs. 1 and 5 legs 23 preferably of metal, there being two pairs of legs intersecting each other, these legs being formed at their ends with outwardly bent terminals 21 attached to the under face of the body section 1.0 by screws 25, or like devices. It will be noted that the lower ends of the legs extend out beyond the vertical planes intersecting the body section so as to give greater stability to the table. I do not wish to limit myself to any particular form of legs nor to the use of leg s1.

aving described my invention, what -I claim is:

1. A convertible ironing board and table top comprising a body section having inclined side edges and additional sections hinged to the small end of the'ironing board at the outside corners thereof, each of the additional sections having straight inner edges and inclined outer edges whereby said sections may be turned into abutting relation with each other to form an extension of the body section or turned back upon the body section to abut against the inclined edge faces thereof, and means for locking the sections in either position.

2. A convertible table top and ironing board comprising a body section, broad at 7 one end and narrow at the other and having side edges uniformly inclined from the broad end to the narrow end, auxiliary sections having relatively Wide rear ends and tapering toward their other ends, the inner edges of said sections abutting in one position, the inner ends of the sections being hinged to the, outer corners of the small endof the body section whereby said auxiliary sections may be turned back upon the body section and abutted against the side edges thereof, means for engaging the auxiliary sections with each other or with the main section, and a brace slidably mounted on the under face of the body section and shiftable to a position beneath the auxiliary sections when the auxiliary sections are in abutting relation to each other.

3. A convertible ironing board and table top comprising a body section, additional sections hinged to one end of the ironing board at the outside corners thereof, whereby said sections may be turned into abutting relation With each other to form an exten sionof the body section, or turned back upon the body section to abut against the edge faces thereof, and means for locking the sections in either position.

4. A convertible ironing board and table top, comprising a body section, additional sections, each approximately one-half the width of the body section, said additional sections being hinged to one end of the ironing board at the outside corners thereof, whereby said sections may be turned into abutting relation to each other to form an extension of the body section, or turned back upon the body section to abut against the edge faces thereof, means for locking the sections in either position, and a brace slid ably mounted beneath. the body section and projectable into position With a portion of the brace beneath the additional sections when. the latter are extended.

A convertible ironing board and table top cmnprising a body section, additional sections hinged to one end of the ironing board at the outside corners thereof, each additional section having a width approximately equal to one-half of the width of the body section, whereby said sections may be turned into abutting relation to each other'to form an extension of the body section, or turned back upon the body section to abut against the edge faces thereof, means for locking the sections in either position, transversely extending straps mounted upon the under faces of the body section, abrace slidably mounted in said straps and longitudinally shiftable to project the brace beneath the additional sections when the latter are turned into extended position, and means for limiting the movement of the brace.
