Description
J. SEDAJ.
FOLDING TABLE.
MRLICATION FILED JULY I. 1916. L
Patented June 11, 1918.
WZZ' A; Q4/6139 JOHN SEDAJ', or KENOSHA, WISCONSIN.
FOLDING TABLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN SEDAJ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Kenosha, county of Kenosha, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to improvements in folding tables, and has for its object the production of. a table of this character which will be provided with improved means for locking the folding support of the table in operative position.
A further ob ect is .the production of locking means, as mentioned, which will be automatic in its operation in the locking of the table support in operative position, v
and which may be readily and, easily operated to release the support for folding.
- Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the combinations and arrange-' ments of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
' Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the under side 'of a table, embodying the invention, the supporting element of the table being shown in operative position,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the construction shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the table in folded condition.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, qomprises a table top 1, at the underside of which is formed a rectangular recess 2. Secured rigidly to the under sideof the table top, in the recess 2, is a pair of spaced parallel cleats 3. The ends 4; of said cleats project from the corresponding edge of the table top, the same being adapted, when the table is in use, to'serve as means for releasably holding the connecting hooks 5 inengagement with slots provi ed for the reception thereof in the wall or main table section in conjunction with which the table shown is employed. The latter connecting means forms no part of thisapplication, and therefore the parts with which the same engage are not shown, I
The opposite end of the table is supported Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 1, 1916. Serial no. 107,147.
by a-supp'orting member or leg 6 which is hingedly or foldably connected at 7 with the under side of the table top, ad acent one edge of the latter. The arrangement is such, as will be seen, that the supporting member 6 is adapted for swinging to position against the under side of the table top, which is the folded position thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, or to a position'extending at right angles to the table top, which is the operative or unfolded position thereof, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Pivotally connected with said supporting member 6 are brace rods 8, the free ends of said brace rods being connected by a bar 9.
The ends of bar 9 slidably engage with' elongated slots 10 which are formed in the cleats 3, the outer. wall of each slot, adjacent one end, being cut through at 11, so
- as to form resilient detent-forming portions 12. The forward or free ends of detent forming portions 12 arev formed for engagement with the ends of bar 9 so that, When the same is moved to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which the same is engaging against corresponding ends of slots 10 and wherein the supporting member 6 is in operative position, said detentforming portions will serve to releasably lock said bar between'the ends thereof and the ends of slots 10, as clearly shown in {Figs 1 and 2. The ends of said slots and the engaging portions of said. detents are circularly formed in order to correspond with the formation of the bar 9 with which the same engage. The under sides of detents 12 are inclined as at 13 so as to increase the width of slots 10 as the same recede from the ends of said detents, thus permitting of free movement of the bar 9 when the same is in registration Withthe rearward end portions of said slots.
With the arrangement set forth, it will be seen,.that when the supporting element is moved to operative or unfolded position, the bar 9 will be carried forwardly, and when the supporting member is in fully unfolded or operative position, said bar 9 will have reached a'position engaging against the forward ends of slots 10, in which position said bar will be looked through automatic en-" fold the same, it is only necessary to engage the forward ends of detents 12 and flex the same outwardly to release the bar 9, in which event the supporting member may be swung to folded position.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r
1. The combination with a table top, of a support therefor foldably connected therewith; means for releasably locking said support in operative position, said means comprising a pair of brace rods each having one end pivotally connected with said support; a member connecting the free ends of said brace rods; cleats at the under side of said table top having elongated slots loosely engaged by said connecting member; and flexible detents formed integral with said cleats and each constituting one side of the corresponding slot, adapted for engagement With said connecting member to releasably lock the same in engagement with corresponding terminals of said slots, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a table top, of a support therefor foldably connected therewith; means for releasably locking said support in operative position, said means comprising a pair of brace rods each having one end pivotally connected with said support; a member connecting the free ends of said brace rods; cleats at the under side of said table top having elongated slots loosely engaged by said connecting member; and flexible detents formed integral with said cleats and each constituting one side of the corresponding slot, adapted for engagement with said connecting member to releasably lock the same in engagement with corresponding terminals of said slots, the inner sides of said detents bein inclined to widen said slots as they rece e from the ends of said detents, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN SEDAJ.
