PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. KLETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NURSERY-CHAI R.
SPIKE'IFIGATIONA forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,257, dated October 12, 1880. Application led July 14, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN C. KLETT', of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nursery-Chairs, of which the following is a specication.
The object of my invention is to furnish a light and convenient nursery-chair for childrens use, which can be folded up into small compass when not required for use.
My invention consists in a chair composed of a back, hinged sides, and hinged seat, provided with hooks or catches for retaining the parts in place when open for use; also, in the combination therewith cfa pivoted shelf, which serves as a stay for the sides of the chair, and can be separated for packing.
In the accompan yin g drawings, formingpart of this specification, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved chair as set up for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on a line from front to back, and Fig. 3 represents the chair in a folded condition.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the back, B B are the sides, and C the seat, of the chair. These parts are cut out from thin boards, of the shape required, and of suitable size.
The back A is fitted with side pieces or strips, a a, to which the side'pieces,B B, are attached by hinges b, so that the sides may fold inward. The back is alsol fitted with a cross-piece, o, to which the seat O is attached by hinges ol d, and to the front of the seat is hinged a board, e, so that said board e may be folded under the seat and the seat then folded down upon the back.
The cross-piece o is in thickness the same as board e, and one side piece, a, is equal in width to the thickness of seat C and board e, while the other side piece is in addition wider by the thickness of one side, B. By these proportions the seat can be folded down, and the sides then folded hat upon the seat, as shown in Fig. 3.
The sides B are grooved on their inner surface,as shown at f, to receive the edges of seat C, which project slightly beyond board o, so that when the seat is raised the edges may be entered into grooves and the seat thus supported. Y
At the inner sideV of board e there are hooks g, which can be caught into eyes that are attached on sides B. .These hooks serve to retain the parts in place, and other devices for the same purpose may be used. There is also on one side, B, a hook, h, placed for catching in an eye on the other side, B, when the chair is folded.
D is the table or shelf. This is made in semicircular form and formed with pivots t', for entering apertures that are formed in the sides of the chair, whereby the inner edge ot' the table is supported. The pivots t' are fitted with pins or lugs i', which, when the pivots are entered and the table turned to a horizon tal position, engage the sides B, and thus hoh` the table in place, and, at the same time, prevent the sides from spreading.
To the front of the table is attached a leg, k. This is formed with a screw-piu, l, that enters a screw-threaded socket that is attached to the under side of the table, and the leg la is formed in two pieces united by a dowel-pin, so that the leg can be disconnected from the table and separated into two pieces. The leg and the table can be placed beneath the folded sides of the chair in the space above the seat, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The back A is formed with a hand-opening, m, for use in lifting the chair when set up.
This construction furnishes a light and durable chair, adapted for childrens use. It can be readily folded into compact form, as described, for putting away or for transportation.
Having `thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The nursery-chair consisting of back, A, provided with strips a, hinged side boards, B B, provided with grooves f, and hinged seatboard C, fitted with hinged board e, having hooks or catches g, combined substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with a chair having the folding sides B and seat C, the table D, fitted with detachable leg la, and pivots i i', for entering apertures in the sides of the chair, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
. JOHN C. KLETT.
