JOL-IN SEDAJ, OF KENOSHA., WISCONSIN.
EXTENSIBLE TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latented Feb. 3. 1214.
Original application filed April 8, 1912, Serial No. 689,101. Divided and this application led .Tune 22,
1912. Serial No. 705,157. Y
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN SEDAJ, a subject of the King of Hungary, but who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Kenosha, county of Kenosha, and
State of Wisconsin, have invented certainV new and useful Improvements in Extensible Tables, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in extensible tables, and more specifically to improvements in means for locking a folding leg of a table in operative position, the present application being a division of my pending application Serial No. 689,101, filed April 8th, 1912, for eXtensible tables.
The object of my invention is the production of leg locking means of the character mentioned which will be durable and economical in construction and eflicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
W'ith these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of an extensible table embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the extension section of the table detached, showing the same inverted to expose the locking mechanism which constitutes the subject matter of this invention, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lower end portion of one of the brace rods included in the invention, and Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the socket member cooperating with said brace rod.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a table consisting cf a main section 1 and an eXtension section 2, one edge of the extension section being releasably connected with the main section, as shown in Fig. 1.
Y The'extension section 2 consists of a rectangular top 3 at the under side of which is provided a foldable leg 4 which is hingedly secured at 5 to said top adjacent the outer edge thereof. vThe leg 4 is held in extended or operative position through the medium of brace rods 6, corresponding ends of which are pivot-ally secured to the opposite sides of said leg, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The opposite or free ends of brace rods 6 are formed with laterally projecting portions 7 whichare adapted to releasably engage sockets 8 formed in blocks 9 secured upon the base members 10 which are fastened upon the under side of the table top, as shown. Said brace rods, when the ends 7 thereof are engaging the sockets 8, will be adapted to securelyhold the leg 4 in operative position against relative swinging. The enos 7 of said brace rods 'are releasablyY held in engagement with the sockets S through the medium of a flexiblestrip 1l which is mounted at its center upon a block 12 which is fastened medially upon the under side of the table top. The ends of strip 11 are adapted to engage against the inner sides of the lower end portions of brace rods 6 so as t0 prevent inward movement thereof and hence so as to prevent disengagement of the portions 7 of said rods from the sockets 8. The construction is such, however, that disengagement of said rod ends may be effected by simply lieXing the ends of the strip 11 downwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, since, by such flexing the ends of Vsaid strip will be lowered out of engagement with said rod ends, so as to permit of the latter being moved inwardly as desired. When the brace rods 6 are disengaged from the blocks 9, the leg 4 will be permitted to be folded against the under lside of the table top so as to occupy a minimum space for storage. The table top 3 is reinforced by longitudinally extending cleats 13 which are secured upon the under side thereof adjacent the lateral edges of said top.
A locking mechanism of the construction set forth is durable and economical, and is of high efficiency in operation.
Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A table comprising a top; a foldable leg` hingedly secured to said top; a brace rod for releasably securing said leg in operative position, one end of said brace rod being pivotally secured to said leg; a laterally opening socket provided at the under side of said table top, the opposite end of said brace rod being bent laterally for engage ment with said socket; and a flexible strip adapted normally to lock said brace rod in engagement with said socket, said strip being` adapted to be flexed to effect release of said brace rod, substantially as described.
A. table comprising a top; a foldable leg hingedly secured to said top; a brace rod for releasably securing said leg in operative position, one end of said brace rod being pivotally secured to said leg7 the opposite end of said rod being adapted to releasably engage a socket provided at the under side of said table; and a flexible strip ar- 'anged upon the under side of said table top and having` a free end adapted to normally eno-age said last mentioned end of said brace rod to hold the same in engagement with said socket7 said end of said strip being adapted to be flexed to permit of release of said last mentioned end of said brace rod from said socket, substantially as described.
3. A table comprising a top; a foldable leg hingedly secured to said top; a pair of brace rods for releasably securing said leg in operative position, corresponding ends of said rods being pivotally secured to said leg7 the opposite ends of said rods being` adapted to releasably engage sockets provided at the under side of said table top;
and a flexible strip fastened upon the under name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
