GEORGE SHE'IOKIN, PORTLAND, OREGON.
CAMPING OUTFIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 24, 1917.
Application filed September 14, 1916. Serial No. 120,077.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SI-In'roKIN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Camping Outfits, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to camping outfits in general, and particularly to camp furniture that may be compactly folded and severalpieces combined to form a carrying case or bundle.
In general my invention consists of a table that may be folded into a box that may be used for the transportation of supplies, and two or more seats or benches that may be folded so as to combine with said box to form a compact and convenient bundle.
I am aware that tables that fold up to form a box have been used heretofore, and also that tables and benches have been combined and folded to form a box, but all such combined devices have possessed the common fault and disadvantage that the box feature of the device disappears when the device is unfolded to be used as a table and benches.
The object of my invention is therefore to produce a combined device that may be transported as a convenient bundle and supply case, and that may be unfolded and transformed into a table and benches without in any manner disturbing the supply case or box, and also to provide in such a combined device simple, economical, and convenient construction.
I accomplish the above objects by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which therefore becomes a part of this application for Letters Patent, like characters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my combined device folded for transportation.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the combined table and supply case or box in folded position with the benches removed, parts being broken away to illustrate the construction.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my device unfolded, showing the table and one of the benches as set up for use.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the cover for the box or supply case.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my device partially unfolded, and illustrating a modified form of use for my device.
The body of my device consists of a'rectangular box or case having sides 6, ends 7 and bottom 8.
The body or box also has a top 9 having an opening therein which is closed by a removable cover 10.
Cleats 11 are provided upon two sides of said opening to support the cover 10 when the same is in place.
The ends 7 and sides 6 project downward beyond the bottom 8, as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of providing a pocket or recess wherein may be disposed the legs 12 when J the same are in folded position.
Table leaves 13 are hinged to the sides 6 at the upper edges thereof, and are adapted to open out Hat and flush with the top 9 to form therewith a convenient table top.
The legs 12 are attached by pivots 1 1 to the body sides 6, and are securely braced by cross braces 15 and diagonal braces 16, the latter being detachable in any convenient manner for the purpose of folding the legs into the above mentioned recess provided for the same.
Such folding legs are in common use upon many types of folding tables and other articles of furniture, and being well known to the art need no extended description or illustration.
It will be observed that the table portion of my-device when folded up, as in Fig. 2, assumes a rectangular form with no proectmg parts, and that when unfolded and set up the box or supply case remains undisturbed, and may be easily and conveniently reached and entered by removing the cover 10.
To render my device of still greater utility and convenience I provide therewith folding benches of peculiar and novel construction that adapts the same to be folded and combined with the folded table to form a compact and convenient package or bundle of rectangular form having no projecting parts, as shown in Fig. 1.
The construction of these seats or benches is illustrated in-Fig. 3, wherein 17 is the top or seat, having hinged thereto at each end thereof an angle shaped member, the horizontally disposed legs 18 of said angle members being adapted to form extensions of seat 17, and the vertically disposed legs of said angle members being adapted to form the legs or supports 19, said angle 7 members being braced in open position by diagonal braces 20 adapted to be detached and folded with the bench.
l/Vhen the braces 20 are detached and the legs 19 folded over upon the seat 17 the portions 18 assume a position substantially normal to seat 17, and the distance between said portions 18 as thus folded is made substantially'equal to the length of side 6 of the table.
The result of this construction is that when the benches are folded they will nest up with the folded table, the portions 18 forming flanges that project over the ends 7 of the folded table, thus preventing the folded benches from moving endwise relatively to the folded table.
A strap 21 is passed around the nested benches and table which are thus secured against relative sidewise movement, and are formed into a neat, convenient and compact bundle or package for transportation, a handle 2:2 being provided for this purpose.
It will be observed that by this simple construction the inside of the box or supply case is entirely without any operating parts and is otherwise entirely unobstructed and in conformity with all the characteristics of an ordinary rectangular box.
When desired the use of the benches may be dispensed with and the table used as a picnic lunch table without unfolding the legs. as illustrated in Fig. 5.
My invention may be made of any size and constructed ofany material deemed convenient and suitable for a device of this character, and while I have illustrated and described a form of construction and ar rangement of parts found desirable when iiaterializing my invention, I wish to include in this application for Letters Patent all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may fairly be considered to come within 'the scope and purview of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having disclosed my invention so that others skilled in the art may be enabled to construct and to use the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a camp outfit, a box like structure; a cover for said box; members hinged upon said box adapted to fold over upon said coveror to unfold substantially flush with said cover to form a table top therewith; legs pivotally attached to said box and adapted to fold into a recess in the bottom of said box; in combination with benches comprising a seat member; an angle member hinged to each end of said seat member adapted to fold up and nest with said box, one leg of each of said angle members projecting over the end of said box when nested therewith.
2. In a camp outfit, a folding table and supply receptacle in combination with benches comprising, seats; legs pivotally attached to the ends of said seats; and edge members attached to the ends of said seats and adapted to encompass said folding table when said legs are folded against said seats and the benches and table are nested together.
3. In a camp outfit, a folding table and supply receptacle in combination with seats; angle members hinged to the ends of said seats, one leg of each of said angle members forming extensions to said seats, and the other legs of said angle members forming supports for said seats, said seats and angle members nesting compactly with said table when folded.
In witness whereof I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, at Portland, county of lvlultnomah, State of Oregon, this 31st day of Aug. 1916.
GEORGE SI-IETOKIN.
