PATENT OFFICE.
DESK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,158, dated February '7, 1905.
Application filed August 5, 1904. Serial No. 219,666.
1'0 1171/0111 it 'Hl/(L l/ concern:
Be it known that 1, HARTFORD .H. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palestine, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful lmprm'ements in Desk Attachments; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to attachments for desks.
it has for its object to promote convenience in the use of a type-writer or the like in connection with a desk by providing means for supporting the same attached to the desk and which may be used in different positions relative to said desk.
The invention consists, broadly, of a shelf or support pivoted or hinged to one corner of the desk and having means to secure it at several different positions relative to the desk.
The invention also consists in mounting a revolving support for a type-writer, books, &c., upon the main shelf or support, the combination of said revoluble support with means for adjusting the main support in such relation to the desk as will permit the former to be revolved, and in certain other details of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of an ordinary desk with my shelf or support attached and thrown around at the side in position to be used by some one seated beside the occupant of the desk. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the main support swung around in front of the desk in reach of the occupant, the catch being adjusted so as to permit the supplemental ievolubly-mounted support to revolve without coming in contact with the desk, part of the desk being shown in section. Fig. 4 is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a reverse plan view of the main shelf or support in position in Fig. 1. Fig.
b 1s a sectional view on the line a; .r of Fig.
1 through the center of the revoluble support; and Fig. T is a sectional view on the line ;I 3 of Fig. 5, showing more particularly the construction of the catch for locking the shelf in its position at the side of the desk and its operating means.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, at the right-hand forward corner, preferably, of a desk 1 I hinge or pivot by any suitable means, such as three hinges 2, a vertical plate or board 3, braced by brackets f and a brace 5, to the upper edge of which is secured the main support or shelf 6. Said main support or shelf, as well as the vertical plate, may be made of metal or wood of the required strength. Said main support or shelf has an upwardly-projecting pin 7, upon which is mounted to revolve a supplemental support 8, the same turning on washers 9.
On the under side of the shelf 6, near its juncture with the vertical plate 3, is slidably mounted a strip or plate 10, preferably of sheet metal. Said strip has a bent-out portion 11 to escape contact with the bracket and is secured to the shelf6 by screws or bolts 12, adapted to work in slots 13 when the strip is actuated by grasping the downwardlycurved handhold or grip 1 t. To the other end of the strip is fastened a cord or wire 15, also attached to a spring catch or bolt 16, secured to the vertical plate 3, and adapted to engage a socketpiece 17 on the side of the desk. By pulling the grip 14: the bolt is withdrawn, permitting the shelf to be turned around in front of the desk. Another strip or plate-like member 18 is pivoted at one edge and to the under side of the shelf 6. It has a grip or handhold 19, similar to one on the strip 10, formed on its edge nearest the edge of the shelf, and in its other edge are a series of notches 20. A stud or pin 21 is engaged by a flat spring 22, carried between two pins 23 in the shelf. Said spring tends to withdraw the strip or plate 18 and hold it beneath said shelf out of the way, while an L-shaped stop, also fastened to the under surface of the shelf, prevents said plate from being withdrawn too far from the edge of said shelf. A small plate A is fastened to the inner corner of the desk and is adapted cured to said vertical member, a socket-piece said support comprising a vertical plate and to engage either of the notches in the edge l of the strip 18 to lock the shelf in different positions in front of the desk, as' when the occupant of the desk wishes to use what is carried thereby. As shown in Fig. 3, it may be desired to revolve the supplemental support, in which case the main support or shelf is secured a little distance out from the desk to permit the corners of said revoluble support to pass. Shallow holes may be made in the upper surface of the revolubly-mounted support to receive the feet of a type-writer, or said support may be used to hold books or the like.
I am aware that changes may be made in my invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof. 1 therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with adesk, of a shelf or support pivoted to a corner of said desk,
a horizontal plate braced together, a bolt sesecured to the desk and means secured to the horizontal member to release said bolt from said socket-piece.
2. The combination, with a desk, of a shelf or support pivoted to a corner of said desk, said support comprising a vertical plate and a horizontal plate braced together, a bolt secured to said vertical member, a socket-piece secured to the desk and means to release said bolt from said socket-piece comprisinga strip slidably mounted on the horizontal member and having a handhold on one end and means connecting said strip and bolt.
3. The combination, with a desk, of a shelf or support pivoted to a corner of said desk, a strip or arm pivoted tosaid shelf, said arm having a handhold on one edge and a series of notches in the other, a plate secured to the front of the desk and adapted to engage said notches, and means to automatically return said arm to its normal position when disengaged from said plate.
4:. The combination with a desk, of a shelf or support pivoted to a corner of said desk, means to secure said shelf at the side of the desk, a lug secured to the desk and a springpressed arm having a series of notches each adapted to engage said lug whereby said shelf may be locked at difierent points in front of the desk, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARTFORD H. MILLER.
