Description

C. H. Looms.
SCHOOL DESK.4
No. 4,190. Reissued Nov. 29, 1870.
timidi gister CHARLES H. LOGMIS 0F PHILADELPHIA, OHIO.
Lottum Patent No. 104,472, dated June 21, 1870; reissue No. 4,190, dltod November 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL'DESKS.
Thssohndulerdmodto'inthmlntmnrsttmdmlkingputdthlninl.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gesamte H. Looms, ot'Ncw Philadelphizain the county 0f Tuscarawas and' State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Schol-Desks; and I do heleby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exaetdeseriptiou thereof, which will enable others skilled in -the art to make and-use the saune', reference heinghad to the accompanying drawing forming pnrt'of thisspecification.
'lhe object of this invention' is to so construct schooldesks, tables, and similar articles that they may be' adjusted as to height to suit persons of diiferent ages, whether in a sitting or standing position; and
1t consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the' accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of fig. 2. on the line zlz.
Figure 2 is ahorizoutal sect-ion of tlg. 1, taken ou the line y y, looking down.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the adj ustingQ-bar.
Similar lcttersof reference indicate corresponding pms- A is a bed-plate, which, with the pedestal B, is cast in a single piece, but which may be made in sep- :irate pieces and fastened to the floor by screws or otherwise,- as may be found most convenient.
The pedestal orpillow Bistubular in this example of my inventio'n, but it may be in anysuitable form for snpportingthe adjusting-bar in the desired position.
G is the'adjusting-bar.y This bar may heserrated .up'on one of its sides, vas represented, or it may beV smooth, and either square, flat, round.- or of other form in cross-section.
A sei-rated strip, D, may be employed to engage with the serrated side of thebr, if desired, and a' strip, E, may be employed st the back ofthe bar' 0,
as represented in the drawing, should this mode be preferred; but I do not confine myself to this or-amy other particular arrangement for regulating or adjust ing'tlie desk or table to the proper height.
l" represents screws, one ormore, which we rk u screw-threads through the pedestal for holding the bai; in `the required position. but .this may be accomplished by a pin or key, orby 'any mechanical device suitable for the purpose..
Gr is the desk or table-top.
lilis a plate, which is-cast on or attached rigidly to the top of the :uljusting-bar.
The desk or table is fastened to this plate, as secu in iig. 1.
Its back edge `is supported by the projecting lip I of the plate, where it' is h'eld by screws or otherwise, as seen in the drawing.
J is a drawer under the tcp.
1x is a recess for an inkstand` L is a clasp, which is hinged to the recess for holding the inkst-and in plaee.-
By this arrangement it will be secu 'that the desk or table is adapted for various purposes, butin more espccially designed for the school-room.
Having thnsgdescribed my invention,
I claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentf- 1. The `top G of a school-desk, provided with the Yrecess -K and clamp L, to receive yand lhold au inkstand, as described. l
2. The combination, with a desktop,G, ofthe lipped plate H I, supported on a vertically-adi estable bar, O, as described.
3. 'The vertically-adjustable 'bar C, combined, as described, with laterally-adjustable bar E and tubular stand B, for thepnrpose described.
CHARLES II. LOOMIS.
