UNITED STATES lPATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. ANDERSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHAIR-BACK DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,431, dated October` 9, 1900.
Serial No. 22 ,7 85. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair-Back Desks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a desk adapted to be attached to a chair-back'by various adjustments, so as to constitute either a blackboard, a table, or a desk proper.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the desk, showing it adjusted to serve as a blackboard; Fig. 2, a central vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, a top view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a section on line 4:4, Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a vertical section of the device when adjusted to constitute a table or desk proper, and Fig. 6 a vertical section showing the device adjusted to constitute an extended table.
The letter at represents a plate the outer or upper side of which is coated to constitute a blackboard.- To the lower side of plate ct are secured two arallel rails a and a de ending p a p :v
screw a2 between said rails.
To the plate constructed as abovedescribed is adapted to be secured a removable and reversible frame, by means of which the plate may be secured to a chair-back A in various positions. This frame consists, essentially, of two parallel rails b, adapted to engage the outer sides of the rails a. The rails b are connected by three cross-pieces b', b2, and b3. The cross-piece or fixed jaw has a concave inner face adapted to fit and engage the chairback. The cross-piece b2 has a tapped opening through which passes a screw b4, carrying a convex movable jaw b5, the whole constituting a vise which cooperates with the fixed jaw b to secure the frame to the chair-back. The cross-piece b3 is perforated to admit the screw a2, carrying a nu't a3, by means of which the frame is removably and reversiblysecured to the plate a. To the cross-piece b3 are furthermore pivoted a pair of clasps or turn-buttons b, by which the device may be suspended from the chair-back. The rails b have tongues t7 formed along their outer sides, which are adapted to be engaged by a pair of grooved rails c, carrying bearings c. In these bearings turns a shaft c2, that passes through the cheeks c3 of a shaft c4. the outer threaded ends of the shaft c2 and en- Nuts c5, mounted upon gaging the bearings c', are adapted to clasp the shelf c4 at any angle desired.
In use the frame is attached to the plate a, by means of the nut a3 iu such a manner that the frame will be placed entirely beneath the plate, and then the combined device may be suspended from a chair-back by means of the turn-buttons 196, Fig. l. Thus the plate a presents an inclined blackboard to the person behind the chair, while the shelf c4, adjusted at any angle desired, is adapted to hold the chalk and other utensils. If the device is to constitute la table, it is by means of the jaws b b5 clamped to the chair-back in a slightlyinclined orhorizontal position, so that the plate a projects over the chair-seat. If the shelf c4 is secured to the back of plate a, (dotted lines, Fig. 5,) the device constitutes a table, while when the shelf is secured to the front of the plate a (full lines, Fig. 5) the device constitutes a desk. Finally, the frame may be removed from plate a, reversed, and reatta'ched, so as to project rearwardly beyond said plate. If the frame is now clamped to the chair-back by the jaws b b5, the plate a will project a considerable distance farther forward, Fig. 6, to constitute an extended table that projects beyond the chair-seat. Thus it will be seen that by a simple adjustment my improved desk may be transformed into any one of a number of useful articles of furniture.
What I claim isl. The combination of a plate with a removable and reversible frame having a pair of jaws and a pair of turn-buttons, and with means for removably securing the frame to the plate, substantially as specified.
2. A plate havingascrewand nutcombied with a removable and reversible frame having a xed jaw, a movable jaw, and a perforated-cross-piece adapted to be engaged by the screw, and with a shelf having rails adapted to removably engage either end of the frame and to be set to different angles, substantially as specified.
. Signed by me at New York city, county and State of New York, this 6th day of .Iuly,-1900.
WILLIAM H. ANDERSON.
