Patented May-9, 19 16 7---wu mm Z 7 Z INVENTOR k\ NELLiE FOUNTRIN A TTOR/VEYS I citizen of the United States,
. receiving NELLIE FOUNTAIN, OF STATION, OREGON.
CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed April 21, 1915. Serial No. 22,854.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NELLIE FOUNTAIN, a and a resident in the county of Marion and have invented an Improvethe following is a of Stayton, State of Oregon, ment in Chairs, of which specification.
The invention relates particularly to a nursery The primary object of the invention is to provide auxiliary seats having different sized openings so as to'accommodate both infants and small children.
Another object is to provide means whereby a receptacle may be detachably secured to the seat so as whenever necessary.
'A still further object is the provision of a chair of this character which is simple in construction, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
The inventive idea involved is capable of a variety of mechanical expressions one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair to chairs and more cha1r.
constructed in accordance with the inventio'n. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the means for securing an auxiliary seat in position. Fig. 4:
is. a perspective view of the bottom of the seat, and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the auxiliary seat removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawing in which like reference characters designate similar parts, the numeral 6 indicates the back and 7 the sides of thechair which may be of any preferred construction. The sides 7 have secured thereto transversely thereof the oppositely disposed supportingstrips 8 upon which rests the stationary seat 9 having an opening 10 therein.
Secured to the bottom of the seat 9 on each side thereof is a channeled support 11 and a similar curved support 12 is secured to the seat rearwardly supports being adapted to receive therebetween a receptacle 13 and suspend the same below the opening 10.
A number of auxiliary seats having difl'erent sized openings therein may be used in to be readily removable the thumb screws auxiliary of the opening 10', said connection with the invention so as to accommodate different sized children and in the drawing there is shown an auxiliary seat 14 having an opening 15 therein of smaller size than the opening 10 of the stationary seat 9. The auxiliary seat 14 rests upon the seat 9 and is detachably secured in position thereon by means of the vertically adjustable cleats 16. The sides 7 of the chair are each provided with a plurality of vertically extending slots 17 which are preferably arranged slightly above the seat 9 and adapted to have passed therethrough the bolts 18, the heads 19 of which are countersunk in the cleats 16. Wear plates 20 having openings 21 therein adapted to register with the slots 17 are secured to the exterior of the sides 7 and are engaged by the thumb screws 22 threaded upon the ends of the bolts 18 whereby the cleats 16 may be adjusted to retain the auxiliary seat. 14 in position. It is apparent that in order to remove said auxiliary seat it is only necessary to loosen may be withdrawn. The slots 17 are made of sufficient length to permit of considerable adjustment of the cleats 16 so that auxiliary seats of different thicknesses may be accommodated.
I claim 2- 1. A chair comprising a back, sides therefor having vertical slots therein, wear plates secured to said sides around said slots, a main seat supported between said sides, an auxiliary seat mounted upon said main seat, vertically adjustable cleats engaging said seat for retaining the same in position, bolts-carried by said cleats and extending through said slots and plates, and means on said bolts adapted to engage said plates for retaining said cleats in ad usted cleats in their adjusted positions.
3. A chair comprising a main seat having an oppning therein, an auxiliary seat detacha 1y mounted upon said main seat and ly mounted upon said main seat and 22 whereupon the seat and fastening means engaging the exterior sides of the cha1r for retaining said tachably mounte chair comprising a main seat having an opening therein, an auxiliary seat de d upon said main seat and having smaller opening, vertically all.
-- justable cleats for securing said auxiliary seat in position, and means operable from 10 the exterior sides of the chair for ad usting said cleats.
