I MPRovED Seizoen-DESK.

To all whom it 'may conce/rn:

Be it known that I, JOHN MEALEY, of Fairville, St. John, New Brunswick, have invented a new and improved School-Desk; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention has for its object to furnish van improved desk, designed 4for use in school-rooms, lecturerooms, public halls, &c., which shallbe simple in construction, strong, and durable, and which shall be convenient for use, being easily adjusted for use as a desk, table, or seat, simply as the'occasion may require; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.

A are the standards or supporting-frames ofthe desk, the lower parts or bases'of which are' attached to the base-bar B, the middle part of the lower side of which may be cut away, as shown in igs. 1 and 3, which enaf bles the desk to stand firmly, even when placed upon a il'oor somewhat uneven.

To the top of the standards A is attached the plank C, which forms the seat, and the dimensions of which. depend upon the particular purpose orpurposes for which the desk is to be used.

D is the back of the seat, which I prefer to make open, as shown in 'gs 1 and 3, and which is hinged to the rear part of the seat C, as shown in iig. 3. 1

The back, D, is secured in place, when raised, by the pivoted or drop-pawls E," which are pivoted to the said back, D, and catch upon notched brackets or catches, F, attached to or formed solid upon the standards A, in fig. 1. This enables the back, D, to be turned down when not required, or for convenience in getting into and out of the desk. It also enables those sitting upon the faces in the opposite direction, support for their backs.

Having thus described my invention,

What I claim as new, and Letters Patent, is

1. The adjustable desk G H, in combination with the seat C and its supports, said desk adapted to be folded back, to form a back-rest for the seat, substantially as shown and described.

2. In combination with the adjustable desk G H, the seat G, and its supports, the hinged back, C, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
