Description
full, clear, and exact description of the- UNiI-ED STATES PATENT onirica, N
" NOCH` HIDDEN, OF NEW YORK, N.
READING AND WRITING STAND.
j Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,224, dated July il,` 1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENocH IIIDDEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented `anew and useful Improvement in Reading and Vriting Stands; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a same, reference being had to theV annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of the stand, with candle bracket on the right side ofthe disk. Fig. 2is a vert-ical section of the stand taken through the axis of the pillar, when the brackets D and E are so sit-uated that the outer extremity of the bracket E, containing the socket z' is over the screw C, and the sidesl of the desk are parallel to the brackets D and E; the desk being closed and the candle bracket as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the desk showing attachment of candle bracket. Fig. 4 is a side view of candle bracket.
Similar letters in the several figures refer to the same part of the stand.
In the drawings, A is the bottom or foot which carries the whole, a notch is cut in it for the purpose of bringing it nearer the chair, when wanted a small thumb-screw a, in the bottom admits of a steady adjustment to any of the inequalities of the floor. The bottom supports a pillar B, hollowed in part at its upper end and screwed to receive the screwed part C of the'bracket D; this admits of adjustment in height, and also horizontally, for any person or purpose making use of it at the time. The end of the bracket D opposite to the screwed end, has a socket to receive a pivot, on one end of the second part of the bracket E, forming an additional horizontal adjustment. end of the pieceE, has a socket to receive the pivot on the flanch piece F, which admits of turning the top of the. stand in every possible position; it has also a piece of larger size, on the top of F, for the purpose of distributing the pressure over a large surface on the bottom of the desk.
G is the box part of the des-k for holding writing materials, &c., to which F is attached; in its interior is a small stud t' turn ing for elevating the farther side of the desk part, asused in the customary posi tion of writing; it also contains a stud or support Q, (Fig. 2) turning on a pin, the opposite point of which enters shallow openings made on the underside of the table, to retain it at any angle for reading or other purpose, either for business or the invalid. On the lower edge of the desk, next to the user, a stop I projecting from the table sur face, prevents the books, papers, &c., from sliding olf the inclined table, at the same time they are secured and kept open by an elastic band L of india rubber or other elastic material, connected with the slides or sliding clasps K; which can be moved from one edge of the table to the other, on pieces R projecting both upward and downward from the table surface of the desk. The table surface F is itself joined to the boX part by hinges in the usual way, to admit of variations of angle for the various purposes required. At one end of the disk top a socket O is secured to its underside, which socket'has a pinching screw P in it; which secures in the desired position the right angle bracket m shownin Fig. 4, the short side of the bracket being inserted in the socket o and fastened by the screw y' so that the side s shall be vertical; the socket admitting of the turning' of the said bracket m about its short arm, for the preservation of the vertical position of the long arm during all the various inclinations of the desk top.
I do not claim a stand with an adjusting screw on the top of the pillar as my invention; nor do I claim a double jointed bracket; nor do I claim 4a desk with a boX part attached, for containing writing materials, &c., wit-h a hinged top, and means of retaining the same at `any angle, nor do I claim the attaching of a jointed bracket as a lamp or candle holder. But* vWhat I do claim is- 1. The combination of the double jointed bracket D and E and` screw C for adjusting the position of the desk both horizontally and vertically, as and for the purpose here` inset forth.
2. The application of the sliding clasps In testimony whereof I have hereunto With an india rubber or other elastic band, signed my name before tWo subscribing Witl0 for securing books, papers, &c., in the ponesses.
sition desired, as herein set forth.
3. The mode herein described of fixing Y ENOCH HIDDEN' the bracket, supportingA the lamp or candle Witnesses: holder, admitting of adjustment at ever GEO. PnTTE-N,
angle the desk may be placed in. JNO. OBERY,
