TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EMAS BECKER, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania., have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tables, Desks, 'fc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingl part of this specification, in which- Fgure 1 represents a. transverse vertical elevation, taken on the line :1: a: of 1.

' The object of this invention is to provide a writingattacbment for tables, desks, 85e., of simple and cheap construction, and which may be readily' adjusted to the position for writing, or be enclosed within the table by sliding into it when not wanted for use.
It consists of a frame, arranged to slide into the table or desl ,near the' top, which is provided with`a writing-tablet, hinged to the front side of the frame, and having a spring connected to it at the back side, whereby it is thrown up in an inclined position as soon as it has been drawn out beyond the top of the table, and which being pushed back alittle, will rest on the edge of thetable, thereby constituting a convenient writing table, inclined at a suitable angle for the purpose. i

Under the said tablet a sliding spring, E, is arranged, which throws it up as soon as it is suicicntly withdrawn from the table to admit of it. The slidemay then be moved back again suiiieiently to allow the tablet to rest on the top of the table, thus abrding a convenient writing-table. The inclination may be varied by adjusting the-sliding frame to or'from the table.
Depression's, F, may be made in the slidingframe -for holdingl pens, inkstands, and other articles.
It will be readily perceived that my improvement may be equally applicableto counters and shelving as sampleboards, to wash-stands with looking-glasses, and to a great variety of similar articles.
Having thus descriubed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination, with tables,'vdesks, or other sirnilar articles, of the sliding frame B, provided with the tablet C and spring E, substantially as and for the purpose described. i
