UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT IVILGOA AND ELIZA B. VVILGOX, OF MAFLE RAPIDS, MIOHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR HANGING WALL-PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,991, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed May 26, 1885.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, ALBERT W1LooX and ELIZA B. WILCOX, citizens of the United States, residing at Maple Rapids, in the county of Clinton and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Hanging Wall-Paper, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to an improvement in devices for hanging wall-paper; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view ofa device embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
A represents a standard, which is composed of the base B and the sections 6, the lower one of which is secured to the base at a slight angle thereto, so as to incline therefrom, as shown. These sections are each composed of two pieces, D, which are adapted to slide upon each other, so as to lengthen or shorten the sections, and thereby adjust the standard to any desired height, and these pieces of each section are provided with a series of openings, E, and are secured together by screws F, which are adapted to enter said openings, as shown in Fig. 2. To the upper end of the lower section of the standard, on one side thereof, is pivoted a button, G, and from the upper side centrally of said section of the standard projects a screw, H, on which is placed a thumb nut, I. This screw is adapted to enter an opening, K, that is made in the lower end of the upper section of the standard. By means of this connecting device slight adjustments of the standard may be made by turning the thumbscrew. When the standards have been adjusted to the required height, the button G is turned vertically, so that its upper side bears against one side of the lower end of the upper section of the standard, and prevents the upper section from turning on the screw H. The upper end of the upper section is provided with a tenon,
L, which is adapted to enter a mortise, M, that is made ina cross bar or head, N. To
(No model.)
A cord, R, is secured to the under side of the lip, by which cord the lip may be caused to release the paper when it has been pasted on the wall.
In Fig. 3 we show a head that is adapted to be attached to the upper end of the standard,
to be used for the purpose of applying paper to the ceiling. This head is similar to the one previously described, with the exception that it is supported in a vertical position on the upper end of the standard, its mortise being on its under side, as shown. Two of the standards and heads will be used when applying paper to the ceiling of the room, one standard being located at each end thereof, as will be readily understood.
Fig. 4 represents a head adapted for applying borders to the wall. This head is attached vertically and parallel to the upper end of the upper section of the standard, and has its hinged spring-actuated lip on the outer edge. Its cord It passes through an eye, S, and from thence to the floor, for opening the lip and releasing the border.
A paper-hanging device thus constructed is cheap and. simple, can be readily adjusted to any desired height, and is very convenient in operation, and by its use much valuable time can be saved.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. The combination of the standard with the head, having means for securing one end of the paper, said standard being composed of the perforated pieces, which are adapted. to slide one upon the other, and screws, bolts, or
pins passing through the openings in the sliding pieces and securing them together, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the standard and the head, having means for securing one end of the paper the standard being composed of In testimony that we claim the foregoing; as the nppeand lower sections, which are each our own we have hereto ailixed our signn- 1o composed of the sliding pieces having a series tnres in presence of two Witnesses. of openings and screws for securing them to ALBE t1 \VILGOX.
5 gether, of the screw H on one section for entcr- ELIZA B. \VILCOX.
ing an opening formed in the other section, Witnesses: the thumb nnt on the screw, and the button IsAAO HEWITT, G, EH'JStilntlflll) as described. '11. F. ANTON.
