UNITED STATES EEICE.
PATENT HARRISON H. LYKENS AND WILLIAM E. RODKEY, OF FREDERIOKSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
REVOLVING BLACKBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,677l dated February 15, 1887.
Application filed March 29, 1886. Serial No. 197,018. (No model.)
.ToaZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HARRISON H. LYIIENs and WILLIAM E. RODITEY, both citizens of the United States, residing at Fredericksburg, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Revolving Blackboards; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings isarepresentation of front view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is aview showing bulletin-board.
Our invention has relation to revolving blackboards; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out inthe claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the base, stool, or stand of the revolving blackboard, and B is the staii or upright, which is secured in a socket or seat, C, in the stand by a set-screw or thumbscrew, D, so as to be vertically adjustable in said seat for the purposes of raising and lowering the blackboard carrier E to suit persons of different heights. V
rlhe blackboard carrier E consists of' a grooved bottom, E', and a grooved top, E2, connected by a center board, F, having blackboard-surfaces, and connected also at the corners by strengthening-rods G. Within the grooves of the blackboard-carrier E are placed the removable extensible sliding boards K K Kl K3, having eyes or finger-pieces L by which to handle them to turn them, extend them, or to remove them when desirable. Thisrevolving blackboard possesses manyadvantages over the ordinarystationary blackboard commonly used in school-rooms and class-rooms, or as bulletin-boards.
By using this blackboard teachers are enabled to prepare lessons sufficient for the day previous to opening the school, and at the same time have the lessons hid from View until such time as they may desire to present them to the class. 4
The blackboard may be used with the single center board, or it' may be provided with any desired number of the extension-boards, and
in either form can be furnished at a very small cost.
Where long sentences are to be written, two boards may be extended-one at each end of the carrierleaving a middle board between them.
The device is so simple that the different modes of using it will readily suggest themselves to the teacher.
As a bulletin-board, asingle board,x,is provided, and a rod, x', extends up from the top of the standard, as before. This single board .fr is provided in its lower edge with a hole, y, into which the rod x'is inserted, and upon this rod the bulletin-board may be revolved in a horizontal plane to exhibit either side of the bulletinboard to persons in any part of the audience.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. As an improved article of school furniture, a blackboard-holder consisting of a base having a set-screw, an upright adapted to be adjustably secured to the base, a holder secured to the upper end of the upright and having a top and bottom board grooved on their inner sides, a central stationary blackboard between the said top and bottom of the holder, and movable blackboards arranged in the grooves thereof, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with an upright, of a holder having a central stationary blackboard and movable blackboards at opposite sides thereof, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HARRISON H. LYKENS. WILLIAM E. RODKEY.
