of Hopkins and State of Texas, have in-' vented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Blackboards, Desks, and Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to combined w blackboards, desks and cabinets, and its object is to provide in a single instrumentality an apparatus which may be used, particularly by a child, for educational and other useful purposes and providing a structure which may be collapsed into small compass or spreadout intoa large area for use as a desk, or a cabinet, or extended into a form permitting the apparatus to be used as a blackboard. I
The structure is particularly usefulin a household where it may be employed as a writing desk or cabinet with means for the storage of writing material and the use of the holding parts of the device for various writing materials, or for the storage of books v or the like, or the storage of stationary, or
the conversion of the device into a blackboard. with which a child may be taught writing, drawing and the like.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, with the understanding that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity to the showing of the drawings, but may be chan ed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the structure in the closed position.
Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the structure of Fig. 1 as viewed from the other side thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation with the desk portion of the structure extended for use at the usual writing angle.
Fi 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, show ing the top portion of the desk structure extended substantially level.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the structure with the blackboard extended substantially vertical. 2
' Fig. 6 isa shown in Fig. 5 withthe blackboardportion of the structure substantiallyvertical.
Fig. 7 is ,a section onthe .line 7-7 of Fig. 5. v I
Fig.1 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 6. i
Fig 9 is a perspective view of one of the braces employed.
Fig. 10 is a cross section to'a shelf used in the structure. v
Referringto the drawings, there is shown a cabinet 1, provided with a body portion 2 of I generally rectangular conformation and sup'portedupon legs 3 so thatthe body portionfis elevated to a suitableiextent.
The body portion 2 is divided by means of vertical partitions at and horizontal shelves 5, 6, into suitablecompartments for manna face view of the structure earner orat on.
the storage of writingmaterials, books, etc.
The shelf 5 is supported on its ends within the body portion 2 ofthe cabinet by sets of cleats? 8, so as to be supported at different heights, while the shelf 5 is made of skeleton form as indicated.
The front of the body portion 2 is provided with a cover 9 in the form of a panel I coextensive with the front of the cabinet and supported at each end by a link structure formed of bars 10, 11 and 12, there being two such structures for the cabinet at opposite ends thereof.
The three barslO, 11 and 12 are connected together at. one end by a pivot pin 13. The
bars 10 are each connected at the other end remote from the pivot 13 by another pivot 14 to the top member of the cabinet, while the bar11 at the end remote from the pivot 13 is connected by a pivot 15 to one side edge of the cover 9.
The bar 12 at each end of the cabinet is connected to the side member of the body remote from the pin 13 through one end of the link 12 which passes through a loop 15 secured to the side of the body member 2 at each end thereof.
Each link 12 is provided with a series of notches 16, 17 and 18', which will catch in capable ofholding the cover member 9 in the closed position or in different inclined positions as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4:, or in an upright or vertical position as indicated in F ig. 5, ineach of: which positions the cover member 9 is locked, while in the upright position shown in Fig. 5,'-the exposed face of the cover member 9 is covered with a blackboard composition 9.
The lower end of the link 12 has a return portion 19 forming a hook or return portion engaging the loop or link 1-5 so as to limit themovement of the bar 12 and by it the raising of the cover member 9 to or just beyond the upright position.
The shelf 6 covers a compartment 20 in which may fit a drawer 21to contain various articles such as chalk or pencils or the like provided with a system of links having a common pivot connection with the ends re mote from the common pivot connection connected respectively to the top of the cabinet,
t0 the blackboard cover, and to the cabinet at a low point.
2. A combined cabinet, desk and blackboard, comprising a cabinet structure with a blackboard constituting a closure for the cabinet andhinged to one edge thereof and provided with a system of links having a common pivot connection with the ends remote. from the common pivot connection connected respectively to the top .of'the cabinet, to the blackboard cover, and to the cabinet at a low point, said last named connection being a sliding connection through a loop carried by the cabinet.
3. An educational cabinet device comprising a body member, a hinged cover therefor, and connected links for the cover comprising a tripod series of links for each end of the cover with the links o feach tri-pod series having a common pivot connection, one of tion therebetween at their inner ends, and" one of the links of each series at" its outer end being individually connected to the cover and the outer'ends of the other links of the series individually connected'to the body member.
'5. A combined cabinet device comprising a body member, a hinged cover therefor, and two series of links for controlling the opening and closing of the cover, the links of each series having a common pivot connection therebetween at their innerends, and
one of each of the links of each series at its the body member, certain of said individual connections being pivotal and the others'lid- 6. combined cabinet device comprising a body member, a hinged cover therefor, two series of links for control-ling the openingand closing of the cover, the links of each series being three innumber, a common pivot for the links ofeach' series-oat one' end' thereof, means for pivotally connecting two of the links of each series one to the hody member and the other to the cover, the re maining link of each series provided with notches, and apair of loopskc'o'nnected to the body member, saidloops providing for sliding connection between the notched links and the body member, and the-notches of said links in connection with said loops limiting the sliding movement in one dire'oe tion of'the notched links.
