Application September 10, 1941, Serial N0. 410,330 4 Claims. (Cl. 312-72) The present invention relates to new and use- 'ful improvements in tables and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which may be used for numerous purposes and which, when not in use, will occupy a minimum of space.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a table of the aforementioned character embodying a unique construction and arrangement for containing and concealing various articles.
Still another very important object of the invention is to provide a table of the character described which may be conveniently used at either or two elevations 01' positions.
still further object of the invention is to providefatable comprising a pair of hingedly mounte'd folding leaves, together with novel means whereby said leaves may be automatically swung to open or operative position.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a table of the character set forth comprising novel means for supporting the leaves in open position.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a table of the character set faith which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, coinpact, light in weight, attractive in appearance and'which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specificatron, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view front elevation of a table constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view. 7
Figure 4 is a plan view, looking down on the table in open position from the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a view in vertical section through the upper portion of the table, taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Figure '7 is a vertical sectional view substantially similar to Figure 6 but showing the front door open and the table in lowered and open positio Figure 8 is a view in front elevation of the table in open and lowered position.
Figure -9 is a fragmentary view in vertical sew tion through one side portion of the device, taken substantially on the line 9-9 of Figure 7. I
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a pair of spaced, opposed side legs I of wood or any other suitable material. The legs I are provided, on their lower ends, with integral feet 2 beneath which casters 3 are mounted. Extending between the lower portions of the legs I is a trough like structure constituting a book and newspaper rack '4. Mounted on the upper ends of the legs I is a platform 5.
Mounted for vertical sliding movement on the upper portions of the legs I and enclosing the platform 5 is a case 6 of suitable material, said case being substantially rectangular in plan. Fixed on the inner faces of the side walls I 'of the case 6 are vertical slides 8 which are operable between pairs of vertical guides 9 which are pro= vided therefor on the outer sides of the legs I.
Hingedly mounted, as at I6, on the upper edges of the case side walls 7 isa pair of leaves II. When in closed position, the leaves I I rest on top of the case 6 and constitute a cover or closure therefor.
The case "5 encloses a vertically movable table top 12 which, when in lowered position, rests on the platform 5, as illustrated to advantage in Figure 5 of the drawings. Vertical guides I3 depend from the end portions of the top I2 -and are operable in sockets or bores I4 which are provided therefor in the upper portions of the legs I, said guides passing through openings which are provided therefor in the platform 5. Mounted longitudinally on the "top I2 is a substantially U-shaped member I5 the purpose of which will be presently set forth. A stop bead or frame I6 is provided in the upper portion of the case 6 for engagement with the top I2.
A longitudinal partition I1 is provided in the case 6, said partition defining a comparatively small front compartment or chamber I8. Access to the compartment I8 is had through the medium of a hingedly mounted, downwardly swinging front door I9 which, when in open position, extends substantially horizontally and is supported by a folding brace 20. Any'suitable means may be provided for releasably securing the front door I9 in closed position. The free end portion of the door I9 is provided with a handle 2|. Substantially similar handles 23 are also provided on the side walls I of the case 6. Spaced shelves 24 are provided in the upper portion of the front compartment I8.
Projecting from the front edge of the top I2 are pins 25. The pins 25 are operable in vertical slots 26 which are provided therefor in the partition I'I. Mounted on the pins 25 for vertical movement in the compartment I8 between the shelves 24 is a tray or the like 21 for the reception of glasses and other articles. I
Slidable on a horizontal bar 38 between the partition I! and members 5, I2 and the adjacent bead I6 is a pair of cams 28. Projecting outwardly or laterally from the upper portions of the cams 28 are arms 29. The arms 29 project slidably through the side walls I of the case B for supporting the hinged leaves II in open or operative position. The pins 25 are engageable with the cams 28 for projecting the arms 29.
J ournaled on a pair of horizontal members 30 in the lower portion of the case 6 is a shaft 3|. Fixed on the shaft 3| and rising therefrom is a pair of latches 32. The latches 32 are engageable with complemental hooks or the like 33 which depend from the platform 5 for releasably securing the case 6 in its raised or elevated position. Also fixed on the shaft 3] and projecting horizon.- tally therefrom is a lever 34 for disengaging the latches when it is desired to lower the case 6. It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the latches 32 are engageable with the hooks 33 for supporting the case 8 in raised or elevated position on the legs I, as seen in Figure 5 of the drawings. When it is'desired to lower the case B and automatically open the leaves II, the latches 32 are disengaged from the hooks 33 by swinging the lever 34 downwardly. Thus, the case 6 is released and slides downwardly on the legs I by gravity. Of course, any necessary force may be applied. As the case 6 moves downwardly the substantially U-shaped member I5 engages the leaves II and swings said leaves upwardly and outwardly to open position. Also, the pins 25 engage and actuate the'cams 28 in a manner to project the arms 29 for receiving and supporting the leaves II in openposition. Downward movement of the case 6 ceases when the stop head or frame I6 comes to rest on the marginal portions of the top I2. The arms 29 and the cams 28 are manually retracted.
If desired, the leaves II may be manually opened while the case 6 is in raised or elevated -position and the top I2 raised to the upper portion of said case beneath the bead or frame I6 through the medium of the U-shaped member I5. When the device is thus used a manually operable bolt 36 is utilized for securing the top I2 in raised position. A socket 39 is provided in the upper portion of the back of the case 6 for the bolt 36. The top I2 is confined to movement in a true vertical plane through the medium of the guides I3. An elongated opening 31 in the top I2 accommodates bottles, etc.
It is believed that the many advantages of a table constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A table of the character described comprising a supporting structure, a case mounted for vertical sliding movement on said supporting structure, a pair of leaves hingedly mounted on said case and constituting a closure therefor, and means on the supporting structure for opening the leaves when the case is moved downwardly on said structure.
