(o1. 19o- 12) l 2 claims. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in portable cabinet tables, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a portable device of this character which, when desired, is adapted to be expeditiously folded in a manner to require a minimum of space.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a folding, portable table of the aforementioned character comprising a container or case of novel construction for the reception of various articles or products.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a combination table of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, light in weight, attractive in appearance, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a combination folding table constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in bottom plan.
Figure 6 is a perspective view, showing the table folded.
Figure 7 is a view in side elevation of a modified form of the invention, the solid lines showing the table leaves in extended position, and the dotted lines showing the leaves in folded position. Figure 8 is an end elevational view of the modication.
Figure 9 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 9--9 of Figure 4 but in solid lines showing the table leaves folded and in dotted lines showing the leaves extended.
Figure 10 is an end elevational view, showing the modification closed with the supporting legs detached.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the invention comprises an elongated box I of suitable dimensions and material. The box I has mounted therein a plurality of laterally slidable drawers 2, said drawers being provided with handles 3.
Removably mounted on the end walls 4 of the box I are downwardly diverging interchangeable supporting legs 5. Sockets 6 are provided on the end walls 4 of the box I for the reception of the' upper end portions of the legs 5. Below the sockets 6, pairs of aligned loops l are mounted on the end walls 4, through which loops the legs 5 are slidably passed for engagement in the sockets.
The box I further includes a removable top 8. Leaves 9 are hingedly secured, as at on the longitudinal side portions of the top 8 for swinging movement about a horizontal axis. The hinges I9 are secured to relatively short .bars I I which are mounted beneath the side portions of the top 8.
Substantially triangular braces I2 are hingedly secured, as at I3, beneath the end portions of the folding leaves 9. The braces I2, when in operative position, abut the side walls I 4 of the box I. Eyes I5 and I5 are provided, respectively, on the ends of the folding leaves 9 and on the braces I2. Hooks I'I on the end walls 6 of the box i are engageable in the eyes I6 for securing the braces I 2 in operative position, and in the eyes I5 for securing the leaves 9 in folded position.
It is thought that the manner in which the device functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briey, when the device is to be used as a table, the removable supporting legs 5, which are stored in the box I, are engaged in the loops 'I and the sockets 6 for supporting said box in elevated position. The leaves 9 are then swung upwardly to a horizontal position on their hinges I0 and the braces I2 are lowered for supporting the said leaves. Of course, the hooks I'I are first disengaged from the eyes I5. After the braces I2 have been lowered, the hooks I'I are engaged in the eyes I6. With the leaves 9 in raised or operative position, access may be readily had to the drawers 2 in the box I. To fold the table, the hooks Il are disengaged from the eyes I6, the braces I2 are swung upwardly to permit the leaves 9 to swing downwardly to lowered position and said hooks I1 are engaged in the eyes I5, after which the legs 5 are removed. Thus, one of the leaves 9 constitutes means for retaining the drawers 2 in the box I while the device is being handled or transported.
In the modification illustrated in Figures 7 to 10, inclusive, of the drawings, reference numeral I8 designates generally an elongated box which is open on oneside. The box I8 has mounted therein a horizontal partition I9 providing upper and lower chambers or compartments 2|) and 2|, respectively. Laterally slidable drawers 22 are mounted in the lower compartment 2i of the box I8.
Mounted on the box I8 is a top 23. Folding leaves 24 are hingeclly mounted at 2'5 on the longitudinal edges of the top 23 for swinging movement in a vertical plane. the leaves 24 project beyond the ends of the box I8, being of greater length than said box. In this embodiment, the triangular braces I2 are spaced inwardly from the ends of the leaves 24 for engagement with the end walls of the box IB for supporting said leaves in raised or open position.
In use, the hooks I1 are disengaged from the eyes I5 and the leaves 24 are swung upwardly to open position. The supporting braces I2 are brought into abutting engagement with the end walls of the box I8 and secured by engaging thehooks I'I in the eyes IS. When the leaves 24 are in closed position, one of said leaves constitutes a closure or door for the upper compartment 2@ of the box I3. vThis is shown to advantage in Figure 9 of the drawings. Latches 2S secure the drawers 22 in closed position in the lower chamber or compartment 2I of the box I8.
It it believed that the many advantages of a combination folding table constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments of the device are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that further modifications The top 23 and and changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A table comprising a box, leaves hingedly mounted on the box for swinging movement about a horizontal axis, triangular solid braces hingedly mounted on the leaves and engageable with the box for vsupporting said leaves in raised position, eyes on the leaves, eyes on the braces, and hooks on the box engageable selectively in the rst-named eyes for securing the leaves in lowered position and in the second-named eyes for securing the braces in operative position.
2. A table comprising an elongated box open on one side, a horizontal partition in the box providing upper and lower compartments open at one side of thebox, drawers slidable in the lower compartment, a top on the box, leaves hingedly mounted on the top for swinging movement about a horizontal axis, and, when in lowered position, being adjacent the sides of the box, one of said leaves, when in lowered position, constituting a closure for the upper compartment terminating above said drawers to provide for access thereto, and triangular braces hingedly connected to the last-mentioned leaf for engagement with the ends of the box to support said leaf raised and for folding against said leaf and nsertion in the upper compartment when said leaf is lowered. y CARL S.
