MAP HOLDER.

UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES MARLIN, OF NEW POINT, INDIANA.
MAP-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,961, dated June 26, 1883.
Application filed March 29, 1883.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES MARLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Point, in the county of Decatur and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Map-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
-My invention relates to a device for holding maps and charts and the like; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The maps or charts used in schools, educational apartments, offices, or the like are ordinarily mounted with small screw-rings, and for service with this class of devices my invention isespecially adapted.
The device is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my invention, Fig. 2, a top plan view of. the sliding adjustable arms; and Fig. 3, a cross-section, showing the engaging-hooks in detail.
The device is cheap and simple in construction, efficient and useful in service, and meets a want felt especially in school-rooms.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, A represents an ordinary tripod, having a vertical socket, B, with the interior of which connects a thumb-screw, b. In this socket or sleeve B operates loosely the center spindle, O, of a frame, 0, and this frame is vertically adjustable, being adapted to be locked in any desired position by the setscrew blocking the socket at the desired point. The frame 0 swings in either direction on its pivot, and has secured upon its upper end guides c, in which operate horizontal sliding arms D. These arms-have tenons d, which have abearing against each other and slide loosely in the center guide, a, through which a thumb-screw, d, operates to lock the arms (No model.)
D when the proper adjustment'has been attained. Secured to each slide arm D is a hook, E, which, from its point of contact with the arm, extends downward, outward, upward, over the arm and downthe other side, inward, and then upward, terminating in a hook, 6, over which the map-rings are to be placed.
It will be observed that more than one map may be engaged upon the hooks at the same time, and that the hooks are adapted to allow the maps to be thrown from one side of the frame to the other, to exhibit both sides without disengaging. them from the hooks. The proper height having been obtained by the vertically-adjustable socket B, the teacher or demonstrator is enabled to readily turn the map so that it will squarely face any part of the class, and may exhibit both sides of a series of maps or charts without disengagement or further adjustment.
Modifications in .details of construction may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of my-invention, the essential features of which will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings referred to.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a device for holding and exhibiting maps or charts, a swinging adjustable frame having sliding adjustable arms, the said arms being provided with hooks E, secured to one side of the arms, and then extend outward, upward, over the arms, thence downward and inward, terminating in hooks e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the tripod A, vertically-adjustable socket B, and set-screw b, of the frame 0, having spindle O and guides c c, the sliding arms D, having tenons d, the hooks E e, and set-screw d, all constructed and arranged to operate as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in' presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES MARLIN.
