No. 271,719. Patented Feb. 6,1883.

UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD LEGER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
`SHOW-STAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,719, dated February 6, 1883.
Application filed October 21, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LEDWARD LEGER,of Uhicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Stands, ot which the following'is afull, clear, andexactdescription, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference heilig had to the accompanying dra-W- ings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that cla-ss of' showstands that are placed in show-windows for the display of wearing-apparel; and it consists of certain novel features in the construction and arrangement ot' the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth in detail.
Figure 1 is a front elevation in perspective; Figs. 2, 3, and 4, detached details of construction.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the main tubular supporting-standards, provided with an enlarged base for retaining the same in an upright position. rlhe series of sleeves B, inclosing the standards A A', are adapted to have a longitudinal adjustment thereon, and are retained in place by the thumbscrews C. The sleeves B are provided with the socket or tubular part a for the reception of the shank-projection a,forn1edintegral with the part b ot' the ratchet-clamp. The ratchetclampis composed of the two disks b b', having teeth on the innerjoining faces, which are adapted to engage with each other. These disks are adjustably secured with relation to each olher'by means of the thumb-screws a2. The part b of the ratchet-clamp is provided with the lateral projecting arm D. The inner faces of the disks b b' are also recessed for th'e reception of the coiled spring 0.3, which encircles the thumb-screws a2, and serves to throw the toothed faces of the disks out ot' engage ment with eachother, when the thumb-screw is slacked hack, which permits the arm or arms D to be adj usted to any desired position. This construction and arrangement forms a strong adjustablejoint, enabling the arms D to support a considerable load. The arms D are provided with the sliding socket d, adjustably secured by thumb-screws, and yhaving the enlarged projected-part d', which has both sides curvedout, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, at 6, so as to retain the cross-bars E in position, no matter to what position the arms D are adjusted. It' the arms D are turned downward, then the cross-bars are placed so as to bear against the inner side ot' the curvedout part at c. When the arms are turned npward, then the cross-bars are changed to the opposite side, as fully shown in Fig. l ot' the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the standards A A', of the sleeves B, provided with the socket part a, the ratchet-disk b, provided with the shank a', and the disk b', provided with the arm or arms D, substantiallyr as described.
2. The combination, with the arms D, of the adjustable sockets d, provided with the enlarged part d', having both sides curved ont at e and the cross-bars E, substantially as described.
