APPLICATION FILED MAYI. 19m.

EDWARD G. MIGHENFELDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED LADDER AND CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 1, 1918. Serial No. 231,912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. MICI-IEN- FELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmhurst, city of New York, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ladders and Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in Combined ladder and bench and the object of my improvements is to provide a simple siting convenient device for the purpose speci- I accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the device folded to form bench,
Fig. 2 is a view of the device extended to form a ladder, and
Fig. 3 is a detail of the locking mechanism.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My improved device comprises a seat section 1' mounted on four legs 2, 3, 4, and 5 and having a cut out section 6 journaled in the seat section 1 by means of trunnions 7 and 8. On the cut out section 6 I provide a leaf 9 depending at a right angle and having legs 10, 11. I provide suitable latches 12, 13 or the like on the seat section 1 adapted to'engage the leaf 9 in its normal position and to engage the legs 10 and 11 respectively when the leaf 9 is elevated as herein described to form a step.
On the forward legs 2 and 3 I provide a step section comprising a leaf 12 hung on trunnions 14 and 14: and having a supporting member 15 set thereon at a right angle to serve as a support when the step 12 is in its elevated position.
My device being thus assembled will when folded as shown in Fig. 1 serve as a bench or stool and when it is desired to transform it for use as a ladder, the lower step 12 is swung out on its pivots or trunnions 14, 14 and the upper step 9 is swung on its trunnions 7, 8 or either step may be used independently of the other and when so extended, the seat section 1 serves as the second or intermediate step between the lower step 12 and the upper step 9.
I have shown a detail of one form of latch in Fig. 3 which comprises a pin 16 seated in the structure and normally held in its depressed position by a coiled spring 17 and having a head 18 by which it may be drawn out when desired but I do not limit myself to this precise form of latch as any similar device may be substituted without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A combined ladder and bench comprising in combination a seat section, having a cut out portion, trunnions in the seat section upon which the cut out portion is adapted to swing, a leaf set at right angles on said out out portions and provided with legs and a latch on the seat section adapted to engage the cut out section when in its lowered position and to engage the legs when in its raised position, substantially as shown and described.
2. A combined ladder and bench comprising in combination a seat section having a cut out portion, trunnions in the seat section upon which the out out portion is adapted to swing, a leaf set at right angles on said out out portion and adapted to form a step when raised, a step section carried on trunnions below the seat section and adapted to swing thereon to form a step in its extended position substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
EDWARD G. MICHENFELDER.
