PARIS DESKIN ODELL, OF MIAMI, FLORIDA.
FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 1N), 191%.
Application filedApril 27, 1918. Serial No. 231,179.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PARIS D. ()DELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention pertains to furniture.
The object of the invention is to produce an article of furniture, in the nature of a chair, so constructed as to be readily folded to occupy comparatively small space when not in use and which is strong and stable when in its set up position.
A further object of the invention is to produce a chair primarily adapted for use in marine vessels, hotels, lunch rooms, restaurants or in private residences where space is required when the chair is not occupied.
In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose to produce a revoluble chair, the seat of which being hingedly connected to the sleeve and arranged upon a pedestal, a
\ spring influenced brace member being also pivoted to the seat and having its outer end arranged for slidable movement on the sleeve, whereby the said brace will move outwardly when the seat is tilted on its hinged connection with the sleeve to permitof the arrangement of the seat in a line with one of the sides of the sleeve-and pedestal, the back being also in the nature of a foldable member so that the same will be swung over the seat when the chair is in its collapsed position.
It is also my purpose to produce a chair of this character which shall be of a comparatively simple nature, and which will be effectively sustained in its collapsed position and supported in its normal position.
I accomplish the foregoing objects and others by a construction and arrangement of parts, such as illustrated by the drawings,
and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a chair constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the chair in its collapsed position.
Fig. 3 is an approximately central longi tudinal sectional view through the device, illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a horizontal sectional view approximately on the line 4l of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the seat,
detached from the sleeve and from the brace.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the sleeve. Fig. T is a perspective view of the back.
Fig. 8 g is a sectional view approximately on the line 88 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 9 is asectional view approximately on the line 99 of Fig. 8.
The improvement contemplates the employment of a base 10 from which centrally arises a pedestal 11, the same being round in cross section. A shoulder 12 is provided between the base 10 and the pedestal 11 and upon this shoulder is designed to rest, the lower end of a sleeve 13, when the sleeve is .in one position. The sleeve has a round bore and is arranged over the pedestal 11. The pedestal 11 is provided with spaced annular depressions 1%, and the sleeve is provided with a spring pressed pin or dog 15 that. enters between the depressions to engage with the shoulders provided thereby, the said dog having an outer operating handle, and by this arrangement, the sleeve 13 may be vertically adjusted on the pedestal 11. The dog is arranged adjacent to the lower end of the sleeve, so the said sleeve may be elevated and retained at a desired height with respect to the base and pedestal. The sleeve 13, at the upper end thereof. is provided with a widened portion or head 16 that closes the upper end of the sleeve. The head 16 is notched providing the outer portion thereof with spaced cars 17, and designed to be received between the said cars are similar cars 18 depending downwardly from the bracket member 19 that is secured to the under face of the seat 20 .of the chair, adjacent the outer end of the chair. A pivot member 21 passes through the ears 17 and. 18, thus hingedly connecting the seat 20 to the sleeve 13.
, The sleeve 13, upon one of the sides thereof, is provided with spaced longitudinally extending plates :22 which are preferably integrally formed with the sleeve, and the said plates have their inner faces provided with confronting slots 23. Designed to be received between the plates 22 is one end of a brace bar 24, the said end of the said bar 21 having lateral extensions or lugs 25, which are received in the slots 23 of the plates The outer or upper end of the bar 24 is widened to provide the same with a head 26, and this head is slotted forming the same with a plurality of spaced cars,
and designed to be received between the said ears are similar ears 27 formed on abracket 28 arranged transversely of and secured to the under face of the seat 20 at a suitable distance inward of the rear end of the said seat. The ears. 27 of the bracket 28 are of a greater length than those of the bracket 19 for a purpose which will presently be apparent.
Arranged between the seat 20 and the brace 24: is a helical spring 25' secured to both the seat and to the brace, and this spring is designed to force the outer or 'lower end of the bar toward the sleeve and the lugs 25 thereof in contact with the walls of the slots 23' to sustain theseat 20 in a proper angular position with respect to the vertical supporting means therefor. The back for the chair is broadly indicated by the numeral 29 and comprises two sections 30. and 31 respectively, the section 30 being connected directly to the seat 20, by, angle plates 30. A rule joint 32 connects the lower section 30 to the upper section 31 of the back, so that the upper section may be swung inwardly but not outwardly of the lower section.
When the chair is to be collapsed, the seat 20 is swung upon its pivotal connection with the bracket 19, the brace bar 24 being moved upwardly through the slotted plates 22 to the position illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The earsof the bracket 28 being of a greater length than the ears of the bracket 19 permits of the arrangement of the seat 20 in a direct line with'the sleeve and pedestal, the spring 25 exerting a tension to hold the seat and the brace member 24 parallel to and vertically with respect to the pedestal and sleeve. The back is folded upon itself over the seat. The seat, upon its under face and at the front thereof, is
provided with an angle finger providing acatch 33. The sleeve and pedestal are provided with openings 34-455 respectively, designed to aline when these members are brought to one position. The catch finger,
the chair, a brace rod hingedly connected therewith, spring means between the seat and rod for retaining the end of the latter in contacting relation with the sleeve, and a hinged back for the seat.
2. In a foldable chair, a base a pedestal arising therefrom, a sleeve on the pedestal, means for vertically sustaining the sleeve adjusted. on the pedestal, a seat above the sleeve, a hinged connection between the sleeve and seat, a bracket on the rear of the seat, a bar hingedly secured thereto, spring means between the bar and seat for retaining one end of thebar in contacting relation with the sleeve, and a back for the chair comprising hin ed sections.
3. In a foldable chair, a base, a pedestal arising therefrom, a sleeve on the pedestal, longitudinally spaced, slotted plates on the sleeve, a seat above the sleeve, brackets on the seat, one of a greater length than the other, a hinged connection between the sleeve and the last referred to bracket, a
brace bar having one of its ends received between the plates and having transverse lugs received in the'slots in the plates, a hinged connection between said bar and the other bracket'of the seat, a spring exerting a tension between the bar and seat to force the end of the bar between the plates, a back for the seat comprising hinged sections, and a catch finger on the back designed to engage with the sleeve and pedestal when the device is in its folded condition.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
