I To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, USHIR KoLoHINsKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Canes and Stools, of which the following is a specification.

An object of the invention is to provide a stool which can be readily and quickly folded and converted into a cane or vice versa. 1

The invention comprehends among other features a stool in the nature of what might be termed a camp chair and which can be readily folded into a compact form to be carried about from one place to another or converted to provide a cane for walking, the device being particularly adaptable for per sons indulging in mountain climbing 'or who take long walks or who desire to have some means for facilitating their progress which will also provide a rest.

Still further the invention comprehends a combined convertible stool and cane which consists of few and simple parts which cannot readily get out of order and which can be manufactured at a low cost.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,--

Fig. 4- is an end view of the device arranged to provide a cane, and

Referring more particularly to the views the device comprises substantially two pairs or sets of uprights or standards 10 which as shown in Fig. 1 are disposed relatively diagonally with each upright of one set pivoted to each upright of thdother set as at 11. The upper ends of the uprights are seated in horizontal bars or elements 12 carrying handles 13 and the seat proper 14 may consist of a piece of flexible or resilient cloth suitably attached to the elements 12.

rights is provided with a cross bar 15 and the "other set of uprights with a pair of relatively spaced cross pieces 16, and a combined brace and stick member 17 having an enlarged head end 18 is mounted to swing upon the cross bar 15, the latter passing through the head, the other end of said member 17 having a plurality of apertures 19, one of which accommodates a pin 20 pro jecting from the upper cross piece 16 so that when the device is arranged as a chair or stool as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the member 17 engaging with the upper cross piece and held by the pin 20 in one of the apertures 19, will act as a brace in the support of the chair or stool.

By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the uprights and brace can be relatively folded or arrangedso that the stool can be easily carried from one place to another. merely grasping it by the handles 13, and it will also be seen by reference to Figs. 4 and 5 that when the stool has been folded the brace and stick member 17 can be swung from its normal position between the standards into a depending position so that it will substantially aline with one of the sets or pairs of uprights 10 and have a fiat face 21 of the head 18 abut against the plurality of cross pieces 16, and by having a projection 22 on the head 18 to extend between the cross pieces 16 with a pivoted clamp 23 on the end of the projection, there will be seen that turning the clamp at right angles to the cross pieces will cause the ends of the clamp to engage with the cross pieces and lock the stick in the said depending position, so that the device can now be grasped by the handles and employed as a cane, the handles, when the chair is folded being arranged to lie very close to each other and in fact form a single grip.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the device is of a very simple construction; consists of few parts that cannot readily get out of order and when made of a substantial wood or other material provides a structure which can be effectively employed both as a cane and chair or stool as desired. 7

Having described my invention, I claim-- A convertible cane and stool comprising a plurality of uprights pivotally connected in pairs, bars connecting the upper ends of said pairs of uprights, handles on said bars, a flexible Sheet havin its ends secured to said bars, a cross piece connecting one pair of the uprights near their. lower ends, a .pairof cross pieces connecting the other pair of uprights near their lower ends, an elongated stick member pivotally mounted upon said single cross piece,'a wing screw carried by the pivoted end of Said stick member, means for connecting said stick member with the upper of said pair of cross pieces whereby to hold'the device in extended position, said 7 pairs ofuprigh-ts being foldable upon their pivots whereby to lie substantially together with said stick member extending downwardly substantially in 'alinement with the foldeduprights, one side of said stick member lying against said pair of cross pieces,

and said'wing screw being adapted to" be passedbetween said pair of cross pieces and turned whereby to engage against them.
