N0.17'7,OZ5. Patented May 2,1876.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SMITH, OF CONSHOHOOKEN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HA'LF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE S. YERKES, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CANES AND STOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,025, dated May 2, 1876; application filed April 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SMITH, of G0nshohoeken, in the county of Montgomery and State ofPennsylvania, have invented a certainnew and useful Combined (Jane and Stool; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the aecompan yin g drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my canestool when used as a stool having a rigid seat. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same when used as a cane. Fig. 3 is a perspective of my cane-stool when used as a stool having a folding seat. Fig. 4 is a broken transverse vertical section of the same when used as a cane.
The object of my invention isto provide a cane which can be used for pedestrlanizing in the usual manner, and which can be utilized asastool when, through fatigue or other cause,
a seat becomes necessary or desirable.
Y designates an ordinary staff or stick, and B an oval or other shaped board, which may be either rigid and in one piece, or formed in sections. When made in one rigid piece it is provided with a short projecting handle, 0,
and two sockets, d d, which sockets may, if,
desired, be in a single casting. When used as a cane the upper end of the staff A will enter the socket d when used as a stool said upper end will enter the socket d.
The seat may be a folding one, composed of the middle section E and hinged sections 0 c,
'the former being fast on the staff A, and rabbeted, as shown at 0 so as to afford shoulders or rests for said hinged sections. The folding sections should have openings, as at 0 for convenience of grasping when the device is used as a cane, and may be upholstered,as shown at a Being, so far as I am aware, the first to have produced a stool which-stands upon a single leg, and is convertible into, or susceptible of use as, a walking-stick, I do not confine my claim to the specific construction shown, but reserve the privilege of varying the same within the principle of my invention.
The sectional as well as the rigid seat may have two sockets for the end of the shaft A, instead of having the latter fixedly attached to the middle piece E, andmay also have the handle Gin lieu of the grasping-openings 0 What I clann as my invention is 1. A combined convertible cane and stool,
consisting of a staff, A, and seat B, said stafl forming a single central support for the seat, substantially as described.
2. The seat B, having two sockets for the staff A, for alternate use when the device is employed as a cane and as a stool, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the cane or staff A, the sectional folding seat, substantially as described.
4. In combination with the staff A and seat B, the handle 0, substantially as shown 'and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of March, 1876.
