JEANIE FRANCES WOOD, OF I-IOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
BUTTON.
S PEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,425, dated November 1'7, 1896.
, Application filed January 20, 1896.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JEANIE FRANCES WOOD,
of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawletters of reference indicate corresponding parts. a
The object of this invention is to provide a button which may be detached from a garment with which it is connected whenever necessary, and which is particularly adapted for use in connection with garments which have to be Washed or laundered, although, as will hereinafter appear, my improved button may be used in almost any position where buttons are required and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bottom of the detachable part of my improved button; Fig. 2, a perspective view of a disk or plate which I employ and which is adapted to be connected with the garment; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section of my improved button, showing also the method of connecting the same with a garment.
In the practice of my invention I provide a button A, which may be of any desired form,
each of these parts may be composed of any desired material and be of any desired form, either circular, angular, or elliptical; and connected with the lower part a is a plate B, which is composed of flexible metal and provided with arms or projections 17, and which is riveted to the bottom portion 0. of the but ton proper. I also employ a disk D, of flexible rubber or any preferred material, which is provided with eyelets or openings cl, by means of which it may besewed to a garment, as shown in Fig. 3, a portion of the garment being indicated at C, and the threads or other devices by which the disk is secured to the garment being shown at E. 'This disk D is adapted to be secured to the garment and reserial No. 576,149. (No model-l tained thereon, and the button proper is connected therewith by bending the arms or projections b underneath said disk, as shown in Fig. 3, and whenever it is desired to remove the said button or disconnect the same from the disk D the said arms or projections 17 may be detached from said disk or separated therefrom by a knife-blade or any other suitable instrument by simply bending the points or ends of the arms or projections 19 downwardly.
The garment may be washed with the disk D secured thereto, and the button may be again connected with said disk, as hereinbefore described, whenever necessary.
My invention is not limited to the material of which the button is composed, or of which the disks D and B are composed, the only object in this connection being to form the disk B of flexible metal and the disk D of such material as will not be affected by water.
The separate portions a and a of the button may also be formed integrally or separately, if desired, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such changes therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with a button provided with a flexible plate which is secured to the under side thereof, on which are formed projections or arms, of a disk which is adapted to be secured to a garment, and said button being adapted to be connected with or detached from said disk, by bending the arms or projections connected with the plate, which is secured thereto, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of January, 1896.
Witnesses:
. A. CUSACK, 0. Gnnsr.
