To all whom it may mm.-

Be it known that 1, Oscar C; INELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westbrook, in the county of Cottonwood and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Chairs and Ironing-Tables; and'l do hereby declarethe following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined chairand ironing tables, and has for its principal object to provide an ironing table which may be easily and quickly folded into such a position as to provide a chair when so desired.

Another object of the invention is to provide a particularly simpleand efficient de vice which may be easily and cheaply constructed of any suitablematerial and which will be light so as to render the same easily handled. r

A further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be locked in either position to avoid danger of accidental folding of the device.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of a combination ironing table and chair constructed in accordance with this invention showing the device as it would appear when in use as a chair, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device in use as an ironing table, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device as an ironing table.

Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the supporting structure which comprises a pair of frames, each of which is formed of the cross pieces 2 and 3 which are secured together intermediate their ends by means ofthe screw or bolt 4. These cross pieces are preferably notched out where they join to prevent the same from collapsing. Connecting the cross pieces 2 is the rod 5 which serves as a support for the seat when device is used as a chair. Each of the cross pieces 3 hereinbefore referred to is provided with an angular extension 6, the

era lly by the numeral 19. 19 comprises the body 20 upper face of which is curved as at 7 and this angular extension is provided with the arcuate slot 8, the use of which will appear hereinafter.

Pivotally mounted between the cross pieces 3 is the connecting bar 9 to which the arms 10 are secured. These arms 10 are arranged to swing with the bar 9 on its pivot and are connected at their upper ends by the bar 11 and the central portion of this bar 11 is reduced and secured through the bearing bracket 12 which is screwed or otherwise secured as at 13 to the portion of the device which forms the seat.

The seat portion of the device is designated generally by the numeral 14 and comprises the main body 15 having formed at one end the reduced portion 16, one wall of which is beveled as at 17 to fit the beveled recess 18 of the back portion designated gen- This back portion Which is recessed at one end to form theears 21, which ears overlie the lateral edges of the reduced portion 16 of the seat 14, and are pivoted thereto-as at 22. Formed at the end of the body 20 opposite the cars 21 is the reduced extension 23 and this body 20 is provided with apertures inwhich the screw eyes 24 extend. These screw eyes are designed to 'extendthrough the slots 8 and lock the back in various adjusted positions when the device s in use.

In order to lock the back 19 and seat 14: in horizontal position as shown in Fig. 4: when the device is in use as an ironing board, there are provided the straps 25 which are designed to form retainers for the locking bolts 26, one end of which is enlarged as at 27, and the opposite end is designed to lie beneath the beveled edge 17 of the reduced portion 16 of the seat 14 to hold the under surface of the seat and the back flush, and thereby form a smooth joint on the upper side thereof.

In order that the cross pieces 2 be further braced and so as to provide an arm for the chair, there are provided the arcuate connections 28 which are screwed or otherwise secured as at 29 to the cross pieces 2 and 3 and bridge the space between the upper ends thereof.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use when it is desired to use the device as a chair, the screw eyes 24 are loosened which will permit the back and seat, formand 3 may ing the table of the ironing board, to slide rearwardly. This will cause the arms 10 to swing rearwardly and downwardly until they reach the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the seat will be comparatively level and the back inclined upwardly and rearwardly therefrom. The screw eyes may then be tightened, and it will be apparent that the whole-will be locked together against accidental movement andthe device may be used as a chair. Upon returning the device to its position as an ironing board, the screw eyes are again loosenedand the seat and back lifted at their joint until they form a level and smooth surface, at which tim'ethe seat is pulled forwardly, thus causing the arms 10 to swing on their pivots into the position shown in Fig. A thus forming a support under the seat portion of the ironing board and by placing the bolt 26 in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, it will be apparent that the top of the ironing board will be smooth, thus presenting a surface over which the iron may freely travel. After the board has been drawn to the farthest forward position the screw eyes are again tightened and it will be apparent that the whole will be supported rigidly and danger of accidental movement will be eliminated. 'While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred'embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the com- 'bination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope'of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
