(No Model.)
I. L. BOYNTON.
. OSOILLATING TYPE WRITER DESK ATTACHMENT. No. 583,856. Patented June 1, 1897.
A TTOR/VEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED -L. BOYNTON, OF KINGFISHER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
OSCILLATING TYPE-WRITER-DESK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,856, dated June 1, 1897. Application filed August 19, 1895. Serial No. 559 79 1. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED L. BOYNTON, of Kingfisher, in the county of Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory, have invented a new and 5 useful Improvement in Desk Attachments,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved attachment for desks, tables, 850.; and it consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and
I arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my attachment as in use. Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the attachr ment. Fig. 3 is a side view thereof, and Figs. 4, 5, and G are detail views.
The desk A may be of the form shown or of any other style of desk or table desired. The improved attachment comprises the cor- 2o ner-post or upright B, which in practice is hinged at a to the desk at the corner thereof, as shown in Fig. 1, so it maybe turned to the front of the desk for use, as shown in full lines, Fig. 1, or when not in use may be col- 2 5 lapsed and turned against the end of the desk,
as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1.
The top, which is designed to support a type-writing machine, is composed of the fixed section O and the section 0, hinged at 0 one edge to the section O. The section 0 is supported on the post B and the strutbrace B, and the section 0 maybe adjusted to the plane of the section O or be turned down against the post B and strut B, as will be un- 3 5 derstood from Fig. 1.
To support the section 0 in position for use, I provide props D, which swing at their lower ends on pivotal sockets. This is preferably effected by providing brackets E on 40 the upright, having pintles fitting in loops at the lower ends of the props, as shown in Fig. 5. These props D are arranged at their upper ends to support the section 0, the latter being preferably provided on its under side with sockets E to receive the upper ends of the props. Near their upper ends the props are connected together and with the strut-brace B by a chain F, and rods G extend between the corner-post B and the props near the upper ends thereof. At its free end the chain F is caught on a hook F. at the edge of the'top section 0, from which it may be detached when it is desired to fold the top.
When turned to the front for use, as shown 5 5 in full lines, Fig. 1, the top may be held by a catch I-I, suitably engaging a device h upon the desk. When not in use, the catch H may be released, the chain F taken off hook F, the props D swung around against or in line with the strut B, and the section O turned down out of the way, as illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 1. y
In swinging the props around to or against the strut B the top is lifted slightly to release the props from sockets E, when the latter are used, the props then turning on their pivotal con nection with the brackets E around to or against the strut B.
The props, as will be seen, permit the compact and easy collapsing and downfolding of the hinged section.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the corner-post, the fixed top section, the hinged section or dropleaf, the props movably engaged at their lower ends with the post and bearing at their upper ends beneath the drop-leaf, or section, the chains connecting the upper ends of said props together and with the body of the apparatus and the rods extending between the post and the props near the upper ends thereof substantially as shown and described.
2. An attachment substantially as described comprising the corner-post, the fixed section secured to said corner-post, the top section hinged tosaid fixed section and turning downward therefrom and the props 9o swinging laterally into and out of position to support the hinged section substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the corner-post the drop-section the props pivoted at their lower 5 ends to the post and swinging laterally into and out of position at their upper ends to support the drop-section and means by which to hold the upper ends of the props in position substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this August 1, 1895.
FRED L. BOYNTON.
