CLOTH ES-DRIER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,159, dated November 10, 1885.

Be it known that I, DnNNrs P. SHARP, of Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers, of which the following, takenin connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to theclass of' clothesdriers in which the clothes-bars are pivoted to the head of a standard, to swing vertically thereon, and are thus adapted to fold closely at the side of the standard.

My invention consists in novel devices for automatically looking the clothes-bars in their horizontal position, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims;

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a top plan view of a clothes-drier embodying my improvements with the clothes-bars in different positions. Fig. II isa side elevation of the same, and Figs. III and IV are enlarged sectional views illustrating the connection of the clothes-bars with the head of the standard.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

H denotes the head,which is pivoted to the top of the standard C. The latter may be either a post set in the ground for an outdoor drier or be provided with a suitable foot for supporting it on the door for an indoor drier. The head H is provided with a series of ears, e e, arranged in pairs and projecting radially from the head. Between each pair of said ears is pivoted a clothes-bar, A, by a pin, d, passing transversely through said parts, and allowing the bar to swing vertically so as to allow it to be suspended from the head H, and thus fold toward the side of the standardin a compact manner, as illustrated in Fig. II of the drawings. The bar A is made yielding longitudinally on its pivot by means of a longitudinal slot, c, in the bar, through which slot the hingepin d passes, andin the slot back ofthe pin is placed a spiral spring, s,which is secured in position by boring in the end of the bar a channel intersecting the slot c, and into this channel is introduced the aforesaid spring, and confined therein by a plug, r, fastened in the end of the channel, as illustrated in Figs. III and IV of the drawings. rlhe spring s crowds the bar A toward the head H. Between the ears e e, at the top thereof, the head H is provided with a stop or projection, b, which engages a shoulder, a, on the top of the end of the bar, and thus sustains said bar in its horizontal position, as represented in Fig. III of the drawings.

Vhen it is desired to drop the bar into its suspended position,it has to be drawn outward from the head until the shoulder a is liberated from the stop b. The bar then can be swung into its suspended position, as illustrated in Fig. IV of the drawings.

In order to automatically guide the bar .A

-into its horizontal and locked position on the head H, I provide the heel or pivoted end of said bar with a cam-face, f, beveled at such an angle that in swinging the bar A into itshori- Zontal position the cani-face f impinges the free edge of the stop b, and gradually crowds the bar outward until said cam-face has passed the stop, when the spring s forces the bar toward the head, and the shoulder a engages the bottom of the stop b, and thus retains the bar in its horizontal position.

B represents a supplemental bar mounted on top of the bar A, and hinged thereon at or near the pivoted end thereof, so as to cause the bar B to normally fall against the bar Awhen in its suspended position. By means of the bar B the clothes are clamped onto the bar A. A suitable catch, h, attached to the free end of the bar B and engaging the bar A, serves to lock the bar B in position.

Having described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination ofthe head H, provided with ears e e, and with stops b, the clothesbars A, provided with the slot o, the pin d, passing through said ears and slot, and the spring s, arranged in the slot back of the pin, substantially as described and shown.

2. The combination of the head H, provided with ears e e and stop b, the clothes-bar A, provided with the cam-face f and slot c, the pin d, passing through said ears and slot, and the spring s, arranged in the slot back of the IOO pin, all constructed and combined to automatically look said clothes-bar in its horizontal position, substantially in the manner speciiied and shown.
