CLOTHES=LINESUPPORT SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,196, dated 311118 21, 1887.

Be it known that we, Runes L. PALMER, of Johnstown Licking county, Ohio, and RUFUS It. CARTER, a resident of Basil, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Supports; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our improved clothes-line support in position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper end of the support, showing the pivoted plate turned up, uncovering the notch for the line.

Similar letters of reference indicate corrcsponding parts in all the figures.

Our invention has relation to supports for clothes-lines, in which a bar slides upon another bar having a suitable foot or base-plate, the sliding bar havinga notch for the reception of the line; and it cousistsin the improved construction and combination of parts ofsuch a support, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a baseplate having suitable lugs or points, I projecting from its under side, and having a slot, 0, at its middle.

The lower end of a bar, I), is pivoted upon a bolt, E, passing transversely through the end of the bar and through the sides of the slot; and this bar is provided with a band or bearing, F, near its upper end, in which another bar, G, slides, the said bar G having a band or bearing, II, near its lower end, with which it slides upon the bar pivoted in the slot of the foot or base-plate. The lower band or hearing is provided with an eye, I, projecting from the side of the same, and the side of the upper band is provided with an outwardly and downwardly projecting lip, J, between which and the side of the band a pulley, K, is journaled. A cord, L, is secured by one end in said eye, whence it passes over said pulley, and is provided at its free end with a handle, III.

The side of the sliding bar facing the bar D is formed with a series of sockets, N, and a Serial No. 211,931. (No model.)

springbolt, O, is passed through a perforation, P, in the bar D, near the upper end of the same, having the spring forcing it inward; and it will thus be seen that when the sliding bar is raised by means of the cord the said sliding bar may be adjusted at different heights by allowing the spring-bolt to enter either of the perforations in the sliding bar.

The outer side of the upper end of the sliding bar is formed with a downwardly-iuclincd notch, Q, of sufficient width to receive the clothes-line, and a plate, It, is pivoted with its upper end above the said notch, swinging upon the face of the bar, and covering the open end of the notch when swung downward, having a knob or handle, S, at its lower end for manipulating it. The upper edge of this plate will be flush with the upper edge of the mouth of the notch when the plate is tilted to have its free end standing directly pointing upward.

Vhen the device is to be used, the slack portion of the clotheslinc is caught in the notch of the sliding bar and prevented from slipping out by means of the pivoted plate, and the spring-bolt will thereupon be withdrawn and the sliding bar raised until it has stretched the clothes-li nc to the desired height, when the spring-bolt may be released and allowed to enter one of the perforations in the face of the sliding bar, the said bar being raised by pulling downward upon the cord passing over the pulley. The bar D, being pivoted at its lower end in the foot or base-plate, the bars may be tilted to either side, and may stand vertical upon inclined ground.

Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the bar I), the band F, secured to said bar, the pulley K, attached to said band, the sliding bar G, provided with a clothes line notch at its upper end, a band, II, secured to its lower end, an eye, I, projecting from said band, a cord, L, secured in said eye and passing over said pulley, and means, sub stantially as described, for stopping the slid ing bar at any desired position.
